I am installing an ISA modem into system. It does not have jumpers and the system picks it up and the install goes fine. When I go to diag. test it always says "cant open port ".
I have installed ports up to com4. I have tried to disable port in bios as well. I can place modem on com1 or com2. System does use a ser. mouse on com 2. I can put the mouse on 1 or 2 but it makes no difference.

    modem ports

What system "picks it up "? Does your box have a ps/2 port for the mouse? If so use this as it will free up the irq & memory addy on serial ports. You stated you "tied" to disable on board serial ports? Ya gotta succeed in this to install an interior modem. Usually disable comm 2 as this is standerd port. If your mouse still works, what port & irq controls it?

    Try this:

Boot to safe mode, remove the modem(s), all com ports, anything in "Other Devices" from device manager.
    Restart, go into BIOS setup.
Disable com 2, set "PnP OS Installed" to NO.
Set "Reset configuration Data" to Yes (enabled).
    Restart.
If it still has troubles, go back into Device manager, System Devices, PCI bus, Properties, IRQ steering tab. Uncheck all except "Get IRQ table using MS Spec... ".
    Restart.
