I've scanned my system repeatedly with Norton, Spybot, Adaware and ALL the listed web scans in this forum... Everything comes back clean. But I continue to have my identity log-in box pop up randomly, and my internet access gets blocked on a daily basis through internet explorer, even though I still have connections for Yahoo IM and MSN IM. My every instinct tells me there is a virus or trojan or something lurking around in my system... but why can't I find it? Anyone with suggestions?

    Thanks.
    Shannon

Thank you, Pete... I am running Norton 2005, so will disable the email spam filter and see if that solves the problem.

Still doesn't explain why my internet access is sometimes blocked when using IE, but I can still have functioning through yahoo IM and MSN IM?

When I reboot this goes away and I have full access again.

    Any thoughts?

each of these (yahoo, IE, MSN ) uses a different "Port" , think of them as holes in the firewall which are opened to allow specific items through. Just like if you have a concrete foundation to your house, you need a hole for the water pipe, a hole for the gas pipe, a hole for the phone, etc. Now if the water valve gets closed, then you still can get gas and electricity through.

Which identity login box are you referring to? Your account for your computer? This sounds like a problem with the screensaver and the setting for on resume require password. It is logging you off , when the screensaver would come on, but it is not activating a screensaver. I would change screensavers, uncheck the box, restart pc and then change screensaver to none and energy settings to always on.

If it is your account on a web site like this, I suspect you have something set to clean temp internet files and cookies periodically and it is deleting your login cookie.
Turn it off or change to clean when you shut down pc.

If you mean that you momentarily loose internet access, and then the login for AIM and Yahoo, or MSN pops up and logs you back in, but IE has no internet access; this is a drop of connectivity, generally either the router or modem is dropping the connection. It is more common to have the messenger connection drop and require login than the web page access since this is not "always on" but a demand thing. If the connection goes down when you are doing nothing , then it just changes IE from online browsing to offline and you need to click the icon where it says offline and change it back to online.
Otherwise you get a page not available warning when you go for a new link.

If this last is the case, the first step is to see if it is the router or modem which is dropping. Do this by removing the router and connecting directly through the modem. If it is the router you can try resetting it and flashing its firmware; but you probably have heat damage and need to replace it. If it is the modem; contact your ISP.
This also brings me to heat, these items need good cooling airflow. If they are stacked or in an enclosed space, move them to get good cooling.
