No prompts with Opera or IE6 on Win98SE PC. Of course I have an up to date filter.ini for Opera and host file for IE. For IE I use Google Toolbar to block popups and Opera is set to block all popups. I use Spyware Blaster's Flash Killer.

Used various Rose City and News links, other than the "...trying to open web page..." security prompts - nothing weird for me - IE6 fully patched and SP2.

    Regards - Charles

    BTW - aren't you violating posting rule #3? :D :D :D

I have a report (1 user 3 pcs) that he gets a Windows Installer prompt for Office 2000 (while he has O2K3 installed... upgraded from O2K).

I have NO idea what would cause this :(

Maybe just a coincidence but Windows crashed on me. There was nothing unusual about the page with my shields up, so I dropped them all and reloaded it. Saw some adverts and a popup, (about smiley icons!?) and it kept reloading something every 5 seconds. No prompts about Office so I closed the page and BSOD. Even got a BSOD on reboot and had to reboot again.

Running Win98 on this occasion with IE5.5 and Office 2000.
I seldom get BSOD’s and I’ve never seen one on reboot before.

With my shields up my content filter blocked
    15 images
    3 Windows
    6 scripts
    3 frames
    1 form

I’d suspect the JavaScript from the ad server – media.fastclick
But there’s another curious one in there. This outgoing POST to Microsoft.

    POST /objects/ocget.dll HTTP/1.0
    Accept: */*
    Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
    Accept-Language: en-au
    User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/2.2.2; Linux 2.4.14-xfs; X11; i686)
    Host: activex.microsoft.com
    Content-Length: 44
    Connection: keep-alive

    (Don’t believe my User-Agent)

    Edit:-
Just a thought. I also filter the Accept: header, which if I didn’t might include my version of Office.

I have XP-pro SP2 and IE6, and all up to date.

Got a weird request for Frontpage 2000. Did normal housecleaning in system, tried again.....same results as above. See attached.

Using XPH with all updates, IE6 and Office 2003 installed.
No problems this time and no strange POST connection to Microsoft.
I don't have Java installed in Win98 so perhaps it was my system looking for updates or something. Whatever it was that web page triggered it.

OK, yea, that's the issue that was reported to me. Can you check again? I've removed the pop-under code from Fastclick, and replaced it with our own ad-server pop-under code.

Fastlick causing strange Office 200 install launch

I had asked Arie to look into this, because I recently started getting a very strange and disconcerting prompt when visiting our homepages:
    http://www.infinisource.com/
    http://www.helpwithwindows.com/

This happened each and every time I would go to either page with the relevant cookies deleted:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Cookies\joe@fastclick[2].txt
    C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Cookies\joe@infinisource[1].txt
    C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Cookies\joe@www.infinisource[2].txt

Needless to say any time I am prompted that something needs to be installed when I visit a web page, this is a red flag and cause for immediate concern. I ran some tests and found that three of our four computers produced the same error... Launching an installer for Office 2000 Premium. The odd thing is that each system is different... all are Windows XP Pro with IE6 installed and Popup blocking enabled, but my own computer had Office 2000 Premium installed and I upgraded recently to Office 2003 Premium. My wife's computer has Office 2000 Basic installed... not premium... and the kid's computer has Office 2000 Premium installed. For some unknown reason my laptop with the same configuration as my desktop, did not get this prompt at all. Nevertheless with 3 out of 4 machines producing the same error, I knew we had a problem.

After some research and experimentation, we determined that removing the Fastclick ad banner code was what was causing this abnormal and undesirable behavior. I had noted that even though popup blocking was enabled on all machines, fastclick popunders were somehow circumventing this setting and still generating popunder ads. I don't have a problem with that... popunders help generate some ad revenue to keep our websites afloat. But when they trigger this kind of installer launch, then this is a definite problem.

We will be contacting Fastclick and informing them of this problem.

Sorry for the delay. Been away from the PC.

I did check today and all is "Normal" when I go to the web site.

Ok, right now it should be back... running the code again... we're troubleshooting with Fastclick support.
