right now am working on a maxtor 160g sata on a dimension 4700 and the message client gets when it boots is no boot device available. walked client through booting from the xp cd and repair function. when we run chkdsk /p or /r and the message i get immediately is no bootable device or needs the system disk. when i run dells diags it give me error 7 which is not good. machine still under warranty so no problem there but trying to get data off and having no luck.

i had a post back nov of 04 regarding this issue where i need an adapter to attach a sata drive to my ide ribbons for data transfers. brought this product http://www.firewire-1394.com/ide-to-sata-converter.htm and have tried this adapter on 2 sata drives that died with no luck. both times my system tells me there is no bootable device or it needs the system disk to boot.

am i doing something wrong or have the 2 sata drives i've worked just been that damaged ??? besides this type of connector is there something different i could add to my arsenal to connect an sata drive to my ide system ???

    advice would be greatly appreciated....greg

    Hi Greg,
Try the Maxtor utilities for that drive model.

Do you have SATA available on another computer? Set the drive as slave in another computer and see if might read the data.

Have you tried the converter using a known working SATA drive?

After that try data recovery programs like Ontrack (a trial version will tell you if the data can possibly be read), unless it is the converter that may not be allowing the drive to be "seen ".

The drive is not listed in the IDE section of the BIOS settings?

ive tried all that never seen hard drive diags fail so quickly. keep telling me basically that there is no bootable drive. bios shows the drive there does not show the sata when attached to my ide system.

no i dont have another sata system correction i have an sata system but still using ide not the sata. i thought sata drives did not have jumpers for slave or master that they auto configured. at least thats what ive read about them.

would be nice if there was an adapter that could convert sata to usb.

had to get drive back to clients cuz dell warranty was coming today to replace. quick response from dell.

    thanks for info...greg

I can only make suggestions since I have not worked on SATA drives.

The motherboards I have with SATA controllers need drivers installed. Have you considered if this may be a cause or a solution?

I take it that the warranty you mention is a new SATA HDD. Could you use the new HDD to install Windows, then connect the "bad" drive to the second SATA connector (I take it there are two SATA connectors) and run the diagnostics, etc, that way? (What I meant by "slave ".)
