    As some of you know my thinking lately may well not be the best. So I would like to get things set up so I can keep down as much trouble as possible. None would be much better.

    And others here have asked me questions about this too.

    I have three machines on the LAN via a Linksys Router. Lets call then A,B,C. At one time I had a couple of things on A set to be Shared. But since I caught a Niece sort of abusing the privilge I stopped that.

    Now when I open MSHome or Local Net ( depending on the machine ) all I see is the machines that are actually on. But when I click on each machine Icon I
    see nothing. Which I believe also says that nothing is shared.

    Now my main question is;

    With out anything set to be shared, can things such as the new AIM problem or anything else be passed from one machine to the other?

    With local people some say yes and some say no. That is why I am asking for more opinions.

    98% of all our games are actually installed on each machine. When we play games between the machines we use Listen/Connect or something similar depending on game. I appears then that things go by IP address. With most games it asks if we want to connect to the IP address.

    Technically, the answer is yes, any comp on your local network *could* be violated IF the malicious pgm (virus) was designed to breach it. Theoretically, one could place a script/trojan on a computer that reconfigures sharing and opens it up to another comp locally and/or remotely. The only 100% safe method of file&print sharing is to use netbeui and unbind tcp from file&print sharing.

    However, the odds of getting a trojan on multiple local comps at same time is slim (as via AIM) and you av app should detect & stop it anyway.

    FYI,
    C is shared as C$ by default.

    So in unushual circumstances other machines can be breached.
    Windows Firewall should stop this.

    I checked the link that Newt provided. When from the run line;

    I type just CMD I get "Setting and Documents" as as result.

    When I run CMD from the C:\Windows\system32 folder I get just

    "C:\Windows\System32." as a result.

    But as of right now I have NO intentions of messing with things because my mind is not 100% on Computers. And my PERSONAL memory STINKS. I should realy not even be thinking about this type of stuff right now.

    Maybe some of these differences are carried over form 98SE because I did put XP Pro overtop of SE.

    So at this time it is the case of, "It is working leave it alone. "

    But thanks for the replys.

    BB - since the risk is so small as to be less than tiny, I think you will do best just to leave things as they are.

    Thanks Newt.

    That is my exact thought and intentions.

    Plus I have more important things to take care of.
