What happens when you go to start/ run and type

    sfc
    and hit enter?

    Does system file checker work?

The correct/ best method is to use system file checker and when it finds an altered or missing file, you prompt it to replace with the version found on your install cd.

Are you sure you are free of viruses? Have you updated your antivirus and done a full system scan?

If system file checker does not work, you can do a dirty install, installing win98 over itself without formatting. You will not loose your data (at least you are unlikely to) but will have to reinstall most programs to get them to work. Some may refuse to reinstall untill you manually remove the old versions, but we can deal with that as needed.

I suggest that if you want to reinstall Windows, boot using the Windows Startup Disk or boot to the CD, do not try to reinstall while Windows is running. I have never had to reinstall any applications when I have used that method. Reinstall to the current Windows folder (do not make a new Windows folder).

On startup or reboot start tapping F8. You should come to the screen for Safe Mode plus other options. Select Command Prompt Only and hit <Enter>. At the prompt type scanreg /fix (notice space between g & /), hit <Enter>. Once done and at the prompt again type scandisk /autofix (notice space k & /), hit <Enter>. Skip Undo if it asks. When that is finished exit then do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot into Windows.

    Maybe some info.

Winrep is not a standard Windows program.

The Windows troubleshooter executable is HH.exe. It appears on my system in the C:\Windows and the C:\Windows\System folders (so the paths would be C:\Windows\HH.exe and C:\Windows\System\HH.exe.

    How to extract single files:

To: Whiskeyman and Mattman: New Error:?

Dr.Watson gave me a bad report. I have KB891711 Component has altered Windows system Files Module Name KB891711.EXE Version 4.10.2223. I have Windows Version 4.10.2222A (Win98SE)

Dr. Watson Mentions in the report: If the Taskbar is behaving strangely, try exiting Run a DILL as an APP. Module Name: RUNDLL32.EXE Description: Run a DLL as an App (everything here seems to be fine in the Taskbar?)

    Version: 4.10.1998 C:\WINDOWS\helpdesk\winrep\ I have a corrupt HELP file 3 errors .362.cab. I can't extract anything from the Win98SE CD? Could the
Above first pargraph be the start of the problem? (I have nothing in my HELP
Files but empty folders). Shall I leave the empty folders there in WINDOWS?

I will try to extract using your new information Mattman, but remember I have
NO troubleshooters working in the help files?

Have files, Did before: But NO TROUBLE SHOOTERS WORKING:

I did get the two files above mentioned off the CD thanks.
I need the steps to use the CD to put Win98SE into the same folder. At what point, and (info to type) to get it into the old windows 98 folder, please? I
have NO CABS Folder in WINDOWS EXPLORER Files. This to me looks like I
Need, C:\WINDOWS\System\Cab.362.exe ? I appreciate your help! The folder
HELPhlp in Explorer, is the ONLY empty folder? Looks like the cabs folder needs
to be working with the HELP.exe files? 3:44 p.m.EST Added: When on the reinstall of win98se, at the end it mentioned "The program setup did not copy
some files, but it never said what the files were. I guess it tried to, I did see
from, then alot of black page and no information. Do you Know if McAfee, Oil
Change can correct these files? (Carbs)?

I am not quite sure what you mean. Can you rephrase this please? This looks like there has been an upgrade from Win 98 to Win 98SE. Is there more than one Windows folder? For example, C:\Windows and C:\Windows000.

I cannot find 362.cab on my system, on a Win 98 or Win 98SE disk or even from a Google search. I wonder if 362 is an error code?

Does it work when you click Start > Help now? Do the "troubleshooters" work now? If the main Windows Help file works, you may find you do not need any of the others.

My system does not have a HELPhlp folder. It has C:\Windows\Help.
Does your system have that folder and are there files in it?

If you want to have a backup for your cab files, make this folder:
    C:\Windows\Options\Cabs
Copy the contents of the Win98 folder on the CD to this folder. You can use this folder instead of the Windows CD when you see "Please insert the Windows CD..." Just direct it/browse to this folder when you see "The Windows CD could not be found.... "

Hope some of this helps you. Can you explain more about what you want to do or what the current problem is?

    Matt

    Win98SE, Corrupt HELP file:

Hello again Matt: I'm in a hurry as I must take my wife to the Doctors this afternoon. No 1. Iwill follow today's instructions from you when I have the time this evening. About six or eight months ago I did have a virus or two. I believe this is when the damage occured to my files. Also I'd been studing the Dr. Watson report About: Windows KB891711 component has altered Windows System files. Module name: Same number with .EXE extension. Description windows same Number component. Version 4.10.2223 I upgraded from Win95A, to Win95B,To full formatted hard drive to Win98SE 4.10.2222A. Everything was working Beautiful then, 2002 in my New KREX P-4 PC. I'm trying to find out from your First instructions to me, of how I re-install Windows98SE to the present Folder as you mentioned, when the Setup Program makes a new folder? At what point in the re-install, do I do that? When it asks me to put it into another directory, what do *I type.(HELP file 3 errors)*C:\WINDOWS\System\Win98se\Folder???.carb.362 is helpdesk (error code)I'm rather new at which folder and how to get the restoration files into thePresent folder? I do have files in my present HELP file. I type sound, then
highlight Troubleshoot, Click next at the bottom of the page and get a square
Box, I can't click into on the next page that says to start the troubleshooter
And the rest of the page is all blank. (It does NOT WORK on anything troubleshooter?) Thanks Matt for your time! Re: MSO5-002 Vulnerability in cursoran icon format Handling could allow remote code> Execution >Critical?

Troubleshooters were broken on purpose as part of a security update:

Perhaps one of these posts where I have run across this problem with other board members will offer more detailed explanations as well as a fix or work around that will work for you....

Here's some google hits on the topic. You may wish to have a look at these. I am just to time crunched, at the moment, and can not give this the attention it needs but I will try to get back to this as time permits. In the meantime, something among these may help you to sort and make sense at of any problem you may be having reguarding this particular part of your issues....

Lots of info to get through there. Seems it is not always a straight-forward fix. Sifting through some of that, if I were you I would try this download first:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WUCritical/q811630/default.asp
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
Because it involves Windows Updates, a reinstall of Windows may not help. The updated files will probably not get overwritten. For your information though, to do the reinstall:
Boot to the Windows Startup floppy disk or boot to the Windows CD.
    Run setup.
It will do a check of the drives, then it will say it is ready to start copying files.
This is the stage where it will ask where to install Windows. Using the Windows 98SE CD it will already be asking to copy to C:\Windows, this is where you want to install it. [The Windows 98 First Edition CD may offer to install to a new folder like C:\Windows000 or C:\Windows001, etc...this is not what you want to do, you need to install over the old files in C:\Windows]. If you installed to another folder different from C:\Windows, your applications would have no links and you would have to reinstall them.
By reinstalling to the C:\Windows folder your registry files will remain intact. All the links (shortcuts) to applications will be as they were previously.

Using this method of reinstalling I have never come out "worse off" than before the reinstall, sometimes much better off :) .

    Hi Bill,

Yeah! happy days! I'm so glad this fix has worked for you. As you saw, if you used the first reference link I gave you, three of us had the same problem and each of us had to use the same method to fix this. All, with a slightly different twist. I tried to cover the issue in all it's flavors. I'm so happy, you to, have found the past post useful.

Your most welcome and thank you for updating your post with the final outcome.

HELP file. EXE Issue a success!

Ann and Mattman, Oshwyn5, and Whiskeyman: Just to let you know Microsoft
Tech Egineer had me uninstall Windows KB891711 Component, that Dr. Watson said, "Has altered Windows System Files." My PC never stopped, or
The cursor, never froze up again, and I had plenty of surfing speed, to bring
Up webpages. since installing Tshoot.inf file:Win98_ts_Fix.Zip I found via of
My Spyware Program a file: C:\Windows\System\EAcceleration\Library The
Spyware Program can't get rid of it. "Is this part of the Fix It, ts file above?

Windows Critical Updates notified me again to install the Security Update file
(KB891711) but I refuse, as I'm now trouble free? goddez1: Comments
Welcome from you, or anyone on my comments at your convenience. Thanks
Again All persons involved in helping me. I was going crippled since 3/23/05
When Microsoft deceided on this their fix, for whatever reason. My files are
OK, with the FIX. I'M DONE TROBLESHOOTING THIS ISSUE.

    Hi Bill,

I don't know what spyware program you are using but I am sure the Win98_ts_Fix.Zip is safe and viral free. Since scripting and activex are involved, I suppose it's possible that it may not be beyond being flagged or detected as suspicious though, by some viral/spyware programs. I, myself, would consider this a false positive due to the nature of how many programs determine that a file is malicious. The site the fix was downloaded from as well as the file itself has been time tested and ran on an infinite number of users systems. If it was viral in nature it would have been brought to the public's attention long ago. The fix has been around and used by many for quite some time.

The following may be off based and not pertinent to you but the file name "eacceleration" does ring a bell for me.....

Not knowing specifically what spyware program [update is most important reguardless of which] or which file was flagged as the suspected infected file, eAcceleration, if directly related to the spyware program of the same name, on the other hand does seem to have a rather dubious past history. NOTE: Keep in mind that I think this was for older versions and was later supposedly taken care of by newer versions. I don't want to become a member of the rumour or gossip mill and do not want any misunderstanding on my knowledge of the program or it's current standing as far as rogue software goes. I am not familiar with nor have I ever used it. If you do, it is up to you to become an informed user and find out if the program you use is a safe trusted and reliable program. Learn how it determines which files are bad and how much weight or value you should put into the infections it finds.

Hi Ann and Bill, I have the W98_TS_Fix.zip file stored on my computer and inside the zip file are only "tshoot.exe" which is the executable file for TShoot and a "readme.txt" file, therefore I doubt that the "C:\Windows\System\EAcceleration\Library" directory came from there.

I have used Tshoot for approx. one year, since the MS update wracked up the troubleshooter and have had no problems with it. I still have the KB891711 and Q811630 updates/fixes installed. If I read it right the KB891711 is the fix and Q811630 fixes the fix and stops it from showing in the task manager (C-A-D). However it didn't fix the troubleshooter problem. :(
