Hi all. My son has been playing a java based game at runescape.com. Lately the charactor seems to take about 2 steps, pauses, takes 2 more steps, pauses, etc. I've watch him play and the game is usually a smoothe playing game. I've tried the game with IE and Firefox but the problem remains on both browsers. Any ideas? Thanks.

EDIT: The problems doesn't appear to be from the game server. My son's friend is playing and has no problem like the one we're having. Any ideas on this because I don't have a clue. Thanks.

Since it sounds like it just suddenly started to give problems,
    - was anything new installed at about that time
    - have you scanned for spyware
    - are you running the latest java version?

Probably also a good idea to open a start -> run line and then sfc /scannow and OK.

Then start -> run -> cmd and from the cmd window
chkdsk /f and ENTER then answer Yes to doing the deed at next reboot then reboot.

Hi Newt, no, nothing new installed. I scan for spyware/virus 3 time a week and I do have java up to date, version 1.5.0.5. Also sp2 with all updates installed.

Since this is an HP OEM machine I need to ask if the sfc /scannow command can be run since I don't have a xp disk but recovery disks instead.

The only thing I can think of that might have any bearing on my problem is one of the disk cleaning utilities I use removed something that it shouldn't have. I use:

    ewido security suite
    Microsoft anti spyware
    avg antivirus
    Ad-Aware
    Spyboy S&D
    Ccleaner
    Easy Cleaner
    Advanced Disk Cleaner
    RegCleaner
    System Security Suite
HijackThis - I use this about every six months or so. Have gotten pretty good with it on my computer since I know whats installed. Whenever I'm unsure I'll research before deleting. If not absolutely sure, I'll leave until I am sure.

    BitDefender free online virus scanner
    windowsecurity.com/trojanscan
    housecall.trendmicro.com

A couple of the above programs are installed as a test. So far Ccleaner is the only one I have doubts about because it has no backup feature.

Other than whats listed no changes have been made. I've been using most of the programs for years so I feel ok with them. But I haven't been playing around seeing what's what and deleting **** for the heck of it like I use too. Not having so many problems since I quit. :) But thats all I can tell you that I can think of. I have no idea what the problem is or what brought it about. Be very grateful if you or anyone can help me with this one. Thanks.

Check your hard drive and if no luck there, the CD contents. You are looking for a folder named I386. If you have one on the drive (or find one on the CD and move it to the system partition, a couple of simple registry changes will point SFC to the location and it will run fine.

RE: CCleaner - I use it regularly and let it remove all the stuff it suggests. No problems to data on the 5 PCs that run it. Not to say it can't cause problems but it isn't known to be bad about that. More folks on here swear by it than swear at it.

HI Newt, yeah I have the I386 folder. I also have the xp disk from the computer I had built for me but am unsure if I could use it on the hp machine. Afraid things might muck up but not sure. Your input?

I found the backup option for ccleaner. It do seem to work well but I've got to where I pretty much insist on a backup anymore.

    Thanks.

What you are describing sounds to me like something is using your processor every few seconds (virus?) do you notice this pause with any other applications?

    close all running applications/games ect...

press ctrl + alt + delete to bring up your task manager.

click the "processes" tab and sort by CPU.

check if there is a process using CPU cycles every few seconds. System idle should be close to 100% on an idle machine.

Hi gasolene, I tried your suggestion and with nothing running the cpu maxed out at 4%. I went to the game site and started the game and checked and the cpu maxed out at 74%. Not sure if that is too much usage and its causing the sluggishness or not. Thanks.

Go for it. CD if you wish or registry tweak and use the loaded one.

Strange experience. I did the sfc / scannow from the run box. A popup came up and said it was detecting if windows system files were intact. Please wait. Ok, I waited. I did not get a popup telling me to place the xp disk in the D: drive. I waited about 10-12 minutes for sfc to finish. When it did the popup vanished. No nothing after that. I waited about 5 minutes to see if anything would happen. No disk activity so I restarted the computer.

I went back to the game site and started the game and the problem still exists. Did sfc run properly? Or is this another one of hp's disfunctions?

Clicked on the link you provided Newt and followed the suggestions provided.

    Step 2

Now you will need to tell your computer you now have the files on your PC. We do this is the registry (type regedit in the Run box on the start menu) by navigating to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
    CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one we want is called:

    SourcePath

SourcePath does not exist on my computer.

    Other Problems with scannow sfc...

    #1..No SourcePath folder.

    #2..No SourcePath folder.

#3..Wouldn't do any good since no SourcePath folder would it?

    #4..Got the I386 folder already on C:

    #5..No SourcePath folder.

    #6..N/A

#7..I do get progress bar so......now what?

Being a HP would the SourcePath be located somewhere else maybe or is there a way to put a SourcePath folder in place without harm? Any suggestions?

    Update

Got the SourcePath straightened out. sfc now asks for the xp disk. Ran to completion but no improvement.

Thinking it may be dx instead of java I ran dxdiag.exe but it said all was well. Reinstalled dx anyway. Was I susposed to uninstall first? I did an over the top install and it completed quick is why I ask.

Could it be a problem with the browsers somehow? I have this problem with IE and Firefox. On this computer. On my other computer the game runs well.

I'm still concerned that sfc didn't run correctly when I ran it. This was my first time using it and I'm not sure what should be the correct way. The program ran for a minute or two then asked for the xp disk. I put the disk in the drive and clicked retry. Sfc ran for a second then I heard the cd rev up. Sfc was reading from the disk, ok. About 3 minutes later the popup returned telling me to put the cd in. I clicked retry but this time the cd didn't run. The popup returned about 4 more times during the check. No disk activity. Don't know if this is how the program runs or not, hence me asking. Anyway, no difference detected.

The only thing I can think of to do is to uninstall Firefox, dx, and java. Do a IE repair and reinstall the others. Your thoughts? Thanks.

I went to the control panel add remove section and noticed that I had sometime in the past deleted all java except J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5. Is this all the java I need or did I mistakenly uninstall a needed java? Thanks.

    Update

I reinstalled the operating system. With this being a hp oem machine I had a lot of uninstalling to do. Still having the same problem at the game site. I have java updated, along with directx, but still it makes no difference. I'm thinking maybe I'm missing an applet or something. I know the game site has an applet and I click yes to accept but it doesn't solve my problem so now I'm at a loss. This problem is with IE and Firefox. If it was with just one browser I may be able to fix it but the way it is now I have no idea which way to go. Any ideas?

    Thanks
