When I download the magical jellybean keyfinder, it comes in a zip file. I click on it to unzip it. It shows a little square box which says "keyfinder ". So far so good. I then select "extract all files ". I run the wizard. Then I get a window with a picture of a key and a lock entitiled "keyfinder ". But when I click on it nothing happens. Actually it flickers. Through trial and error I find that what has happened is that a file has been created in my temp folder- RarSFX0. If I open that folder, I find "findkey" , "office key ", "xp key ". Then if I click on find key, the magical jellybean works. Why will it not work as it is supposed to from the downloaded folder? I don't think it has anything to do with file associations. Zip files are set to be opened with compressed zip folder.

What I have tried: 1. right clicking folder and extracting files to another folder-only get the lockand key pic. 2. emptying temp folder-

All that happens is as described above--a flicker and the creation of a stupid RarSFX0, RarSFX1, RarSFX2, ect. in the temp folder. Actually, I can use the keyfinder if I move one of the RarSFX files to My Documents or desktop, but it is frustrating that the compressed zip does not work correctly. Btw. it works correctly with other zip folders. Any ideas?

Jayt36--Maybe you downloaded a corrupt kf141.zip file. Try downloading again. Are you downloading from http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml ? Did you scan with your antivirus program before using?

Perhaps you should use the classic view of WinZip to unzip and extract the .exe file. You click on the kf141.zip file|highlight the contained keyfinder.exe file|click Extract on the Toolbar|choose the location where you want keyfinder.exe|Extract. Just remember to where you extracted! :)
When I click on keyfinder.exe I get a small window on the same screen showing the CD Key. No RarSFX0 files created.

Thanks Jim. I downloaded it from three different mirrors at the site.

I scanned it with Nod32. It shows 5 files. 0 infected.

I guess that is the next step, but I still would like to understand why the compressed zip folder does not work as it should and why the creation of the RarSFX files?

Tried Winzip. Same thing. Only shows lockandkey. Creates RarSFX file in temp. This has me totally baffled. :-(

Thanks for trying to help Welch Jim. I can get it to work by dragging one of the RarSFX files to the desktop or to My Documents folder -opening it and clicking on keyfinder. In the RarSFX folder all the files are extracted; so, it works. Maybe it was packed with WinRar?

jayt36--I saw no sign of WinRar, but who knows?
Anyway, I am pleased you found a workaround.
