    Win XP home ed SP2
There are problem with one of our PC.
When a critical error occurrs in Windows XP, the system will reboot automatically by default. I have disabled the option to automatically restart the system after a failure, to let me show the error message instead.
So now when a critical system failure occurs, I see a blue screen with a cryptic description of the error.
Unfortunately, there was no possibility wait for this errror and write error code directly from screen. So I take a report from a Event viewer, in most cases, critical error is one and the same.

    Hello kenton,

    To start troubleshooting this:

What are you doing when the error occurs?

Does it happen in safe mode?

Have you tried disabling your auto startup apps (msconfig > startup tab) and then enabling one by one - running for a while then enabling another?

In msconfig > general tab, there are two other startup options aside from normal: diagnostic and selective, give those a go as well.

Two probable causes, driver or application errors or conflicts.

    Regards - Charles

    Hello,

when the error occurs, pc just show blue screen with error, all hangs, so I press restart button, its only possible way. This errors occurs without visible reason, spontaneously- not very often, its not my Pc, so its difficult to get this moment and write exact message from screen when error happens.

    Hi Kenton,

Aside from the steps I outlined in my first post, you can check if this may be a hardware problem with the memory.

You can download a memory diagnostic program with instructions on its use from Microsoft from here: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

    Hi Charles,

you meant to uncheck some applications in msconfig > startup tab, and then enabling it one by one? This critical system error occurs not very often, so it not easy catch this moment.
Its impossible to determine problem base on this code?

    1000000a, parameter1 00000166, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 804e5433.

microsoft even not keep they link alive.

    regards,
    kenton

    Hi Kenton,

You're right, it is awkward to do that with an infrequent problem. I'm not a programmer and even if I was, probably wouldn't help anyway.

Ok, back to basics. The following is from advice that Newt gave to someone else experiencing a tough problem from this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=49158
Do you have a XP cd? Because this might get to trying a repair of the installation.

    Hi Charles,

this is for repairing of the installation. In my case, the issue can be caused by incorrect driver or application confilict, so this may no require repairing of installation.

    Hi Kenton,

I wrote originally that this problem is "probably" caused by driver/app conflict, that doesn't mean that there can't be other causes.

The sfc scannow repairs Windows corrupted/missing files and chkdisk repairs corrupted disk files, either one may be a cause, and in any case does no harm. It would eliminate those two from consideration. This type of problem is a bear to pin down, and anything you can do to narrow the causes is a help.

    Regards - Charles
