I've recently instaled the Netscape 8 browser. I previously used Netscape 7.2. When I try to "Send Page" in Netscape 8 it tries to open Outlook (which I do not use) instead of my usual Netscape email program. Also, when I click a link in an email, it opens Netscape 7.2. :(

How can I get Netscape Mail & Netscape 8 browser to work together?

    Mark,

To bring up Netscape 8 when clicking a link in a message in NS 7:

Close NS 7 including Quick Launch and open Windows Explorer
Open the Netscape 7 *.slt folder
Open the file prefs.js file in Notepad or Wordpad

Add the following line at the bottom of the prefs.js file:

    user_pref( "network.protocol-handler.external.http ", true);

Save prefs.js and restart Netscape 7

Now, when you click a link in NS 7 mail, NS 8 will display the URL but only IF NS 8 is your default browser. Important!!

    Lost NS 8 after trying

Don't know what I did, but after trying this change my Netscape 8 is messed up.

I still have my bookmarks but I can't see my Bookmark Icons in the toolbar and can not see any sites. If I go to Manage Bookmarks and select a site, the tab comes up, but I never reach a site.

I've uninistalled (after saving my bookmarks) and started out with my NS8 CD and reinstalled - no change - then I tried downloading the lastest version 8.0.4 and still no change. My old faithful backup (NS7.2) is running so I know its a software issue, but can't figure it out.

For some reason and I don't see a tie-in, my system/files backup (Ghost) got wiped about the same time and tell me it stopped because there was too much file activity.

I'd do another uninstall of NS 8, but am feeling a little nervous as I have kept the bookmarks up to date in NS7 . . . is there a way to import them from 8 to 7? And any hints on what went wrong?

If you did what ramona suggested nothing of the sort that happened to, should have. There is no reason, since all you did was to add one line in your preferences.
Uninstalling the program should accomplish nothing, because what is going on is in the Profile, which is not removed by uninstalling. Do you know where the profiles are located?
Anyway nothing makes sense, because whatever Ramona said said applies to NS7, and you should not gone anywhere near NS8.
If something was done wrong, NS8 should uninstalled, and there is an option to remove the profile (it least this option used to exist). Then, you can reinstall it, and you should be prompted to import a profile from a variety of programs.
You are trying to work with NS8 which has no mail, and NS7 mail. I think that it is a hassle, and I never tried it. I am using Mozilla Thunderbird, as my default mail client, and there is no problem.
So, think about what you did, and how it matches with what was posted.

    Cal,

Is it possible that you added the script to your Netscape 8 prefs.js file, rather than to the Netscape 7 prefs.js? As Westside has explained, adding that script to the Netscape 7 prefs.js file has no effect on Netscape 8.

If you want to move the Netscape 8 Bookmarks to Netscape 7, EDITED:

Copy the bookmarks.html file in the Netscape 8 salted folder (randomcharacters.profilename)
Paste the file into your Netscape 7 salted folder (xxxxxxxx.slt). You may want to rename the Netscape 7 bookmarks.html file to Xbookmarks.html first.

Sounds like more is going on than just Netscape, since you had a problem with your Ghost backup...

f you want to move the Netscape 8 Bookmarks to Netscape 7, then "Export" the Netscape 8 Bookmarks as an LDIF file. Save it anywhere on the HDD. Then open Netscape 7 and "Import" the LDIF file from the folder where you saved the file.

This is the procedure for Address books.

However, you can File|Export as the bookmarks.html, from Manage bookmarks.
But for bookmarks, the file can be directly imported from Netscape7.2.
    Again from Bookmarks(top toolbar)|Manage bookmarks|Tools|Import| wherever it is, something like:C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Netscape\NSB\Profiles\blahblah.default\bookmarks.html
You will get duplication of bookmarks, though.

Thanks Westside, looks like I've come to the stopping place for the day, when I start messing up like this! I would explain, but it would just make things look worse. At least one of us is awake.

I did edit the post and have corrected my snafu!

    Sorry Cal.
