My new computer came with Windows XP, Macafee & Norton antivirus software. Both of them were apparently temporary. After Macafee ran it's course, I deleted it, and everything that had anything to do with it from my computer. This last week I got my final warning from Norton ( "one more day, and you will have to become a subscriber etc "). Rather than shell out any more cash, I decided to download Avast! antivirus free software in it's place.

No problems so far, but every time I boot up my computer, a window pops up with this message:
So apparently, even though the Norton software is no longer updating it's virus database, the information that it has compiled up until this time is still in use every time I turn on the computer. What I'd like to know, is would it be a good idea to just disable the Norton antivirus and allow the Avast! software to fully function properly, or perhaps completely delete the Norton stuff from my computer altogether? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm sure you will get lots of advice from more knowledgable persons on the BBS, but it is a well known fact that two AV's active at one time on a system creates problems such as the type you are seeing. I would suggest you disable Norton, at least for the time being. You will probably have to do this from the startup list as well as from within Norton itself. If your trial period or update subscription for Norton has run out there probably is no good reason to keep it on your system.

Removing Norton can be tricky, however. Recommend you go to Symantec site for instructions on how to do this completely. You may also have to seach through your file system and registry to completely remove it. Suggest you to a "search" on this BBS for "removing Norton" as this topic has come up frequently.

    Good luck!! :D

I recently removed Norton Antivirus 2005 using the ADD & REMOVE in windows control panel and then installed Avast in it's place no problems at all.
