http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?p=263148#post263148 deals with problems getting offline web page display to work in IE6. I was trying to troubleshoot the problem and after no luck whatever with IE, I decided to see if Firefox would do it better.

So far I can't even find any Firefox equiv. of the Offline or 'save as .mht' options that IE offers. Am I just not looking in the right place?

Newt, FireFox under File>Save Page As gives you three options in the "Save as type drop down box ":

    "Web Page, complete "
    "Web Page, HTML only "
    "Text Files "

Is this what you are looking for in FireFox?

    Newt,

What JohnB mentions is how to "Save" a web page to the HDD, with a choice to save it with, or without the entire content, i.e. images, etc.

To work offline in Firefox: File | Work Offline

Firefox can browse (complete with images) any pages that have been previously visited while online. Whatever you have in History can be browsed offline, however, any link not visited while online, will require an Internet connection.

There are some Firefox extensions which will enhance this feature, although I haven't tried them. Here's an example:

That's true, but only if you have a cache set up in Tools > Options > Cache. If you don't use a cache (broadband users may feel that they don't need one), or you clear the cache while offline, you won't have access to the History until you go back online.

Exactly, Jim. In Firefox, I set my Cache for 30 MB, which covers plenty of territory.

Thanks to all. Once I figured out that the cache settings are under Privacy in the tools menu, I made sure it was large enough.

After that the whole process was a doodle by just following the instructions here.

I spent the morning visiting businesses who are going to list merchandise for sale on a web site we (wife & self) are building and several of them didn't have any easy way to get internet access so I needed to have the site loaded on my laptop and available. It was.

The business folk are potters who are great at creating beautiful stuff but who are internet illiterate (and more than a little internet-sales phobic) so we needed to show them how the site will look and will work.

    Newt,

Glad to hear you found Cache settings, and I should have given you directions. Sorry 'bout that!

Be very careful now, you might just become addicted to the best browser around... :D ;)

 I'm afraid that is already happening.

On that note, how do you arrange things on the top bars? IE has those nice little grab bars that allow moving links or google toolbar or similar to a different location or resize them. I'm sure there is some simple setting (I may have the bars locked or something similar) but I've been to lazy to look around enough to find the 'fix'.

    Newt,

Right click on any blank area in the Toolbar and click on "Customize ". Lots of things to select from. Drag off anything you don't like, and drag on the toolbars anything you need.

FYI, Firefox 1.5 rc1 was released yesterday, and it seems quite solid. RC=Release Candidate 1. Much more solid than a Beta, and the Options have a totally new layout. Fx 1.5 rc1 is a zip file, so no installation, and no uninstall. Just unzip wherever you wish...

Along with "customize" comes Extensions. They allow you to add features at very low overhead. Don't know how many extensions are available, but it is a boatload. Some are frivolous, a few are niche, many bring value to your browsing experience. Extensions can be found at Mozilla site(s), along with sites like Extension Mirror which seem to keep current with new releases / updates.

Good grief. I seem to have gone over to the Dark Side all of a sudden. Hopefully I can live with the shame of it.

Does anyone know of way to rearrange the toolbars, keeping the same same number?
Example: I have the roboform Toolbar, which, in FF lies beneath the Personal Bookmarks Toolbar. In NS80.4 it is below the MenuBar, above the Navigation bar. I like that set up.

    Newt ...

For some reason, the BBS isn't letting me attach an image, but here's an example of what you can do with your FF toolbar.

The BEFORE is the plain vanilla toolbar you get right out of the box, and the AFTER is just one example of what's possible. Not only can you drag elements on and off, but you can move them around.

There are hundreds of extensions available for FF, but usually only a few are really necessary for most of us. The hard part is selecting the right ones for you. :)

For those wondering why I was unable to attach an image to my last post, here's the answer ...

One of the extensions I use with Firefox is AdBlock Plus, a content blocker with features not built into FF's native pop-up blocker. AdBlock Plus was preventing the "Manage Attachments" window from appearing.

One of AdBlock's features is "whitelisting ", which allows webpage content you may wish to view on a recurring basis (such as the "Manage Attachments" window). I haven't yet figured out how to whitelist the "Manage Attachments" window but, in the meantime, all I have to do to post attachments is turn AdBlock Plus off.

    Good Morning Jim

I also use Adblock Plus, along with it's companion Adblock Filter set.G Updater. I no longer create any filters, no need (or any previously created by myself). This combination is allowing access to "Manage Attachments" window for wBBS. I have only added one site to "White List ", @@http;//online.tvguide.com (site lost some user options). I have this in the "Use User Define Filter" list so auto updates for filter list does not over write my addition.

    Dennis ...

Thanks. I ran across "Adblock Filterset.G Updater" this morning, as I was looking up AB+'s URL for my last post, but I haven't installed it yet. Funny that you should have whitelisted TVGuide.com, as I did it too ... AB+ was blocking the capsule descriptions of the various shows.

BTW, I don't know what other extensions you may be using, but if you have more than a couple, MR Tech's Local Install 4.0 is the best extension manager I've seen. Download it at the "Install:" link.

AB+ Updater allows you to keep your old filters (toggle active /disable). Prior to installing Updater I also exported my created filters from AB+ just for safe keeping. After I installed Updater, I disabled my filter set and flew with provided set. Like you, the only issue was TV Guide and show description views. After a week I deleted "my created filters" from AB+ / Updater. I then enabled "Use User Define Filters ", since this is where Updater stores "your" created filter (I've have not created any yet) and added white list sites .. and prevents over-writing when new filter list is updated/downloaded.
Will definitely give Mr.Tech a good look, Thanks
