I have Windows XP on my computer. Is there some way other than dragging an icon onto the taskbar to get the icon on the taskbar. Every time I try to drag an icon onto the taskbar, the icon springs right out of the taskbar. Thank you.

To Newt Vail: That article does not answer my question. Can you answer my question so that I can understand it? Thanks.

abx - I will be more than happy to try. But first, I will need you to clarify your question so I can understand what you are talking about.

The taskbar is basically divided into 3 sections. If using the default setup, you will have a Start button at the very left. Next will be some "single-click, quick-start icons. Moving further to the right will be space for minimized program icons. At the far right will be some additional icons that relate to some running applications like your clock, maybe an AV program, and so on.

When you speak of "dragging an icon onto the taskbar" you speak of something I have never thought of doing (which is not to say it isn't a good thing to do - just that I never thought of doing it). Can you say which section of the task bar, where you are getting the icon from, and what it should accomplish?

If you are talking about placing items in the Quick Launch, right-click in the taskbar and de-select Lock the Taskbar. Drag and drop your item, "size" the Quick Launch area, then relock the taskbar.

I've tried what you described, locked and unlocked, and the icon pops right back in place on the desktop when I try to drop in in the "middle" taskbar area. What is this supposed to do anyway? It seems to be normal behavior.

To Newt Vail: I am getting the icons from the desktop and I can't place it anywhere on the taskbar. One of the icons is a dictionary.

yes this was possible in windows 2000, but not windows xp it seems. what i think and hope you mean, is that you can drag shortcuts down to the mid part of the taskbar, for easy access to.. lets say, your favourite programs and drives.

(the shortcuts would become small icons, left alligned right next to the start button)

ive done this in win2k, and the shortcuts remained when i took a system upgraded from w2k (where id already positioned the shortcuts down there), but it will not work with a clean install of xp.

yeh.. i wonder why the h... they didnt keep this feature. it made everything so much simple, or to say it in another way, made simple things even simpler.

so im also interested in finding out more about it.

ABX: By now you may have your problem cured, but if not, right click on a grey area to the right of the other icons on the left side and click on properties. Then click on Show Quick launch. I don't bother with Lock Taskbar, as it does not make any difference. Now, right click on item wanted and drag to the right of the other icons on the left and drop it, and then it will show you choies on what you want. You can even drop them in between others. They say you can't but you can.
