In Windows Explorer, I found a file in a work file, "Holder.dbx," named
"Email messages in INbox for Main Identity erased @.000.cab. "

I can not access this through the import function in MSOE. Opening it in Windows Explorer yields funny faces - code. I do not know how to restore these emails to a folder in MSOE.

I used ScanDBX and another program recommended by this BBS in October 5 post responses. This probably generated the *.cab file.

How can I retrieve these emails?

You need to try and "extract" the dbx file out of the cab file. Then try the import function.

    Mr. Jones,

I can not get past the "Browse" level of import. The files inside of the folder are not recognized.

Is there a problem with the folder being labelled "Holder.dbx?" It is a separate file folder outside of MSOE. Someone from this BBS advised this technique for another problem some time ago. So the file is still labelled *.dbx.

Try adding a new folder first inside OE called Holder. That will create an empty holder.dbx file and might help solve the issue.

ps. my friends call me Steve.

    Steve,

Thank you. I'd be proud to be counted as a friend.

The import function does not appear to recognize the emails in the *.cab file. I have a folder in OE labelled "Holder" and one outside in a standard windows file. I have successfully stored emails in that kind of folder for import to OE before.

One other method comes to mind. There is a Ghost image of the drive dated two days before the failure in OE and loss of all Inbox emails up to Cot. 4. After that, the inbox performed as usual and stored all emails without erasing them. If I store the emails from Oct. 4 to now, restore the Ghost image of the drive, I lose two days of emails and whatever updates on W2000 were installed since Oct. 2.

I do not know how to "extract" from the *.cab file. Besides, this file only contains 116 KB, not enough to account for some 350 emails. Maybe around 30 or so.

    What do you think?

Goaglen--I have no experience with ScanDBX. The situation you describe may be specific to that program. Does it offer a Restore or Read function? Or a Help button?
Do you have any reason to believe that the files in that .cab file are something you want? Have you clicked on the .cab file to see what is in there? Are these .dbx files?
Normally, you cannot read .dbx files. They are in code. When .dbx files are in the OE Store Folder (OE Tools|Option|Maintenance tab|Store Folder) OE can read them. But there are a couple of programs that can read .dbx files for you.

No, Welshjim, I am not sure that the emails in the cab file are worth it, unless they are mightily compressed. My inbox, unrestored, has 5,000 KB. The cab file has 116 KB, not enough to make up for lost email 1/1/05 to 10/2/05.

The version of ScanDBX I have is a free download without restore or read function. Even with ZTree, I can not find these emails. However, some function of one of the programs I ran found those "lost emails" in the cab file. I thought that these few migth contain two days worth, the ones I lost.

I will try the OE Bkp in a few days. Thanks.
