My computer has been very slow the last several days, has been locking up requiring manual shutoff or reboot, will not launch some programs when click on icons and some favorites disappear and reappear occasionally when on ISP home page. Problems seem to have started after granddaughter started using AOL instant message couple of weeks ago (Ver.5.1.2600.2180) but can't be absolutely sure.

Am running Windows XP w/SP2, ZoneAlarm, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, NAV and Spyware Blaster, all recently updated and latest versions.

Have run Spybot S&D, 1.4 today with one problem ntoed "Windows Security CenterAntiVirusDisableNotify" which was fixed. Ran Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06r1 today with no Critical Objects. Ran Symantec Security Check (online, free) with no problems noted. Am attaching my HJT (1.99.1) log which I ran few minutes ago after all the scans and would appreciate any suggestions.

    Slow Computer HJT Log

I listed this post couple of days ago and so far no one has responded. Should I have put it in another part of the forum, have I made it too confusing, not enough information, etc. I'm fairly new at this so if I need to make some corrections, pls let me know. Thanks ...

Three things probably prevented any responses:
    - it is really very clean looking so nothing to get the guru folks excited
    - we have lots more problem posts than real experts to deal with them. These days so many baddies do well hiding themselves that many of us are reluctant to offer suggestions for fear we might cover up signs of an infestation and thus make your situation worse.
    - Fridays and the weekends probably see the fewest of our experts looking at the forum

From what I can see, you did well cleaning up after your visitor. The only HJT item I'd get rid of is
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.0.0.0.0

If you want to let the grandchild (or children) use the PC without complicating your life, you can set up passworded logons and make one for the youngster that has limited rights to the PC so the intentional or accidental damage would be minimal. If you are interested, post a new thread to the XP section saying what you want to do and be sure to say if you run XP-home or XP-pro since the two handle security pretty differently.

Also say if you use NTFT or FAT32 for file storage. If you aren't sure, open a cmd window (start -> run -> cmd[/b] and once you get that nasty looking command prompt, key in chkdsk and ENTER. The first information you get will be the type of file system. As an added benefit, the scan will tell you if there are problems that need fixing and if so, how to run chkdsk again to fix them.

    Slow Computer (HJT)

Thanks Newt for the response. I now understand much better. Will follow your suggestions for sure and will repost if I find anything significant to pass on. Have found the forum very useful and in fact learned how to copy/paste HJT from Lonny Jones post (ref. tomcoyote.com/hjt/#copyandpaste). In using the search feature, have gotten answers/solutions to a number of pesky computer questions/concerns.

    Thanks again ...

Good luck. Grandkids are fun but they can certainly make you crazy at times. Mine surely do.
