What directories may one delete from Profile without 'damaging' the mail program?

I am having trouble with low 'free space' on one computer - and even though I delete mails (I want to keep NO emails on that computer) and also delete trash, etc. - I do not seem to affect the 'free space' available (btw - why is that?)

So I have thought I have to go into the 'internals' and delete there but i am afraid I will affect the operation of the program.

How may I permanently delete email to gain real 'free space?'

    Rob,

When you "Empty Trash" from within Netscape, you must also "Compact Folders" to regain HDD space. Otherwise the messages remain on the HDD.

Many thanks - did it (- will add this 'hidden trick' to magic box along with 'hidden files') - and recovered 'free space' -- but maybe not all available - see no. 2 below

    1. One strange scenario

    a. have home computer B where I leave mail on server for office computer A.
    b. there were 5 legitimate maiils (after MWP spotted about 80 spam)
    b. I deleted ALL mail on Profile presently using - including these 5 and all 'old' - then emptied Trash - then compacted all folders
    c. noticed increase in 'free space'
    d. sent 2 mails to myself - copies of NYTimes articles
    e. 'checked mail' with MWP - now showed 7 - incl the 2 new ones I sent
    f. went to NS Mail and 'get messages'
    g. surprised to see inbox only showed the 2 'new'
    h. others were still there as went to office an hour later and all 7 came in
    i. if I really had made a PERMANENT DELETION - how did NS recognize that those previous 5 had been downloaded to that computer - when they were still sitting nicely on ISP server and 'should' have been completely new mails?

    2. Re my original question - am trying to learn here about 'mail directories' - what directories MAY be deleted from various Profiles without messing up the program - and also allowing continued use of that Inbox in that Profile?

I guess what I'm asking is that is there another way to 'trash' emails using WinEx - resulting in permanent deletion - and still keep programs 'working?'

(for example - one reason for question - I believe there are some emails on computer B that are not accessible via NS and I don't want to try to reinstate access to the Profiles - I'm not even sure I know how to do that and would just prefer not to open that can of worms before I clean up my plate with stuff already on there - including reinstating 'lost mail' on earlier thread on computer A)

    Rob,

If you have elected to Leave Mail on Server, downloaded the 5 messages on Computer B, then deleted them, emptied trash, and compacted folders, then they should no longer be available on Computer A. You might want to check with your ISP on that one.

You can always delete your Inbox and Inbox.msf file to start with a pristine Inbox. However, it's best to do the deleting from within Netscape.

You can bypass the Trash folder by highlighting the messages and then Shift+DEL, and then Compact folders.

Maybe I wasn't clear - sorry - A is the computer that removes from server - B leaves on server - so for scenario (a) to (i) - I had deleted ALL 7 mails from B - supposedly permanently. Yet the 'get msg' on NS pulled down ONLY the more recent 2.

My question is why B didn't pull down all 7 because they were left on server (as they should be - and verified by all 7 coming down on A an hour later) and if all traces had been removed from B re these 5 mails - then B 'mail' should have seen them as 'new' and taken them down off server.

It really is as if there was some kind of 'ghost' of those 5 left after 'deletion' on B that told 'mail' not to take down those 5 as they had once been taken down to B.
