    Hey all,
I hope someone out there can help me with this as i have no idea.

My dvd/cd writer is not functionaling properly. I have no idea why. The only thing i can think of is that i downloaded Daemon Tools a few days ago. Its a virtual cd emulator. Ive tried un-installing but im still not having any luck.

My drive will read DVD's, but nothing else. When ever i try to burn a cd using Acoustica Mp3 Cd i get the error message:
'Error: 'write' command failed on device 1:0:0 read/write error on bad medium detected
    (04h 00h 02h 03h 02h 00h)

Ive also tried using other burning software to try and burn data cds, ive tried Instant CD+DVD but that never worked either.

I thought that maybe a driver update would fix it. But i cant find the driver for it beacuse under the manufacturer it says (standard Cd-Rom drives). Windows also says that the device is working properly, althought it clearly isnt. The update driver just says it cant find the files. And as far as i know i dont have the drivers on cd/floppy.

Anyone got any ideas. Thanks in advance.

i'm having a tough time right now matching up that error code number (04h 00h 02h 03h 02h 00h) with any searches.

can you please try again to see if those are the correct numbers?

then in uninstalling that program, did you try uninstalling it from the "add/remove" programs in control panel?

is there a site in which has removal tools for that program?

you can probably get drivers for your device from the web. did you try uninstalling the dvd/cd writer and reinstalling it, allowing windows to build a "generic" driver for it, then updating from there?

    post back when you can.

Im not currently at home so i cannot check those numbers. But when i get home i will. Also those numbers appear when i am trying a test burn, before actually burning the CD.

I uninstalled deamon tools using the uninstall files in the start menu. It does not appear inside my add/remove programs anymore.

As for the drivers, well i cannot tell what make or model my drive is because windows does not tell me. It just says what i said in the previous post.

If i was to uninstall the drivers for my drive would windows be able to find the required drivers needed to re-install it? I want to be sure so i dont totally wreck the drive.

    Thanks again

Ok, i did the everest thing and it just says ATAPI DVD dual 4xMax and the driver provider is microsoft. Thats all the information it gives me.

Uho bad news. Ive just tried doing the test burn again, and now Acoustica just keeps saying insert a blank disc when it gets to checking the files will fit on the disc. :(

I hope someone can help me.

    Thanks

I believe this may be a problem with the buffers , installing the virtual drive altered the registry value, and uninstalling it did not revert them.

    http://www.burnquick.com/faq.asp#15

I would say there is a problem with reading the blank disk and determining that it is blank. Either drive letters/ paths got changed and it is looking for or at the virtual drive instead of the actual drive, the cable is loose or damaged coincidentally, the drive laser is dirty, the buffers are incorrectly set (will have to get back and see If I can find that article) , or you are trying to save a file which is larger than the disk can hold.

Well the data will defo fit on the disc. As for the buffers and the registry, i think you may be onto something.

What can i do to solve these problems?

Ive tried a few things since my last post. Ive taken apart my computer and ensured all the connections are secure. I have also un-installed the drivers and let windows re-install them. But still no joy :(

Its proboaly obvious that the little LED light on the front of my dvd drive is flashing but i thought it might be important in some way.

Thanks for everything so far guys.

CD-ROM access is missing after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
Although written for specific error codes produced when you uninstall Easy CD creator, it is often produced when you uninstall other burning software or virtual drives.

Double check that the drive letter has not changed. If it has, change it in disk management console in admin tools/

maybe check to see if the drive has a firmware update. this is different than the driver. the maker of said dvd drive will have such if there is one. this is usually a good idea regardless of the problem

Hmm, i deleted the keys in regedit. Still not working though, although the light on the front has stoped flashing and is always on now.

How can u get this firmware? I have no idea what make or model my dwd-rw is so i cant really search for it.

    Thanks

ID the thing. who'd u get it from? everest may be able to ID it for ya but i'd not trust software IDs and just pull the drive. read it's make/model. if u got it w/ a dell or such, they (dell or maker) should have the FWare updates.

i'd add that problems i've seen w/ cd/dvds that can't 'see' a disc are often FW related. but u may also wanna check u'r IDE config. best to isolate the drive if u can. eg - make it the only drive on that chain and setup as master. mabye check the MB level chipset drivers too as they also may have updates. ditto on bios.

Hey, i pulled the drive and ided it. Turns out its a MSI. MS-8404A.

I found some firmaware for it. But i cant download it because of a broken link on the MSI web site or something.

Anyone know where else i can get this software? and anyone know whether this will proboaly fix my problem?

    Cheers

If the above does not work, try reinstalling the Acoustica program again (reinstall over itself).

u should read the instructions from the archive file on how to. they normally have one called readme.txt or such. find it and read it.

in any event, anything from dos level should have a .com or .exe to work. i see nothing of that in u'r post.

    generalized norm for flashing:

    flash.exe binary_flash_file_for_ur_product.bin

where FLASH.EXE is the utility they provide and binary_flash_file_for_ur_product.bin is the actual flash info file they also provide.

it's VERY unwise to flash blindly here ;) ... u can do some damage. please read and follow the instructions AND confirm that they ARE for u'r product. eg - if it's not the proper util/file, u can do damage. caveat emptor

im using what you suggested skeet. From that web site. Un-fortunately the instructions are german or something.

    Anyone speak german. Lol.
    what should i do?

do NOT use that file then. it can't be identified as proper for that drive. it very well MAY be fine but ... do NOT chance it.

who made u'r machine? is it a vendor box - dell/gateway/etc? or is it a custom build?

    or get the driver here:

MSI tech support firmware dload 8404a

    read the readme.txt and do:

    1) create bootable floppy
    2) copy dvflash.exe and 260d.bin to floppy
    3) boot w/ floppy
    4) type: dvflash 260d.bin

i'd also note that whenever i flash something, i power down the system and cold start it. eg- turn it off and then back on

Firstly my computer was made by Tiny computers. Who have now gone bust.

Secondly i tried flashing the drive. Went throught the program and stuff. It wrote to disk and did some other stuff then it just closed. So i restarted, and ive still got the same problem :(.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks
