Hi : I finally got XP home. I have a couple questions. In my email or web pages there is a BOX with a X in it not allowing me to see entire page. I'm running Adaware 6 & AVG antivirus.
The fonts are huge in IE. Netscape is ok. I'm running 1280x1024. Only half of the screen has webpage. balance blank. Everyting very small.
    thanks

curious if this was an 'upgrade'? if so, u should pay attention to the prep work that should be done prior to upgrading ;)

in any event, boot in safe mode w/ networking and test. if ok, start lookin at u'r startup progs.

Hi, this is a brand new system. Not upgrade. I need to do some tinkering here. Not really sure how to set font, regular, large , xlarge or custom. Not sure what security features are stopping things from looking proper.
    thanks

outside IE ... see the desktop/appearance tabs options. like large fonts and large icons if u'r desktop is the issue. the large icons is under the effects tab there.

My first guess here is that you had a different original resolution and the "normal" window size was set in it and you are opening to normal , not to maximized . It is actually possible for "normal" to be larger than "maximized" which is full screen (in your case 1280x1024).

Most programs remember "normal" based on its last setting when it was set with only one window of the program open and then closed.

Option one is to right click on the program shortcut, and choose properties and where it says run: change that to normal. Then click the shortcut to open the program, resize the window by dragging the corners to expand or shrink "normal" until you have what you want.
If the normal window is larger than full screen you may have to raise your resolution first. When done , close the program and restart your computer.

Alternatively, you can change the run: to maximized. THis way it should open the program to full screen. (note the IE desktop icon is controlled from the shortcut in start/ program files. Note that quick launch and desktop icons must often be set individually). Once you open a program, change from maximized to normal (or in IE you can just click a link to open a second window since by default it opens normal size then close the maximized window) resize this normal window, close the program and restart windows.

Most web pages are set up with viewing it at 800 X 600 screen resolution in mind, since that's long been the default for Windows.

Many web page authors set the width of their pages to a specific number of pixels. It looks fine when there are 800 pixels across the screen. With a resolution of 1024 pixels across the screen...the default on most new systems, especially with LCD monitors...the page's specific number of pixels only takes up part of the screen, leaving a blank space down the right-hand side of the page.

If the page's author would set up his page to use a percentage of the pixels available, the page would look the same at every resolution. Unfortunately, a lot of authors either don't know that or don't care.

As far as screen resolution/font settings, the only way to get it the way you like it is to play with various combinations.

If the boxes in Outlook Express and Internet Explorer you're referring to are right below the toolbars/address bar...

In IE, it's probably the popup blocker. You can turn it off and on and configure it under Tools>Popup Blocker.

In Outlook Express, it's probably the security stuff. You can configure that in OE in Tools>Options>Security tab. Specifically, "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that potentially be a virus" and "Block images and other external content in HTML mail." I have them both unchecked.
