    hi team
ive just installed win xppro 64 bit
i was told it will be an advantage when
vista or longhorn comes on stream.
    is this true
are there any disadvantages [or advantages ]
i read on another board where by the drivers are harder to get on
64bit then xp pro 32 bit
but i didnt have any problems getting drivers
apart from the dialup modem driver.
of which i had the disk.
    any one have any ideas
ive been off the board for some time
so i need to catch up.
    thanks
    marty.

Vista won't be out for a year. I can't see any reason why having 64 bit now would help to upgrade later..

Same here. No need to get XP-64 now.

I did install it on my new system, but it is useless for me, as there's no printer driver for my HP Deskjet 3650 (and any work-around I found didn't work either), nor is there a driver for my Panasonic KX-FLB755 (Printer/fax/scanner).

I have to install the 64-bit Vista beta & see how that works out (as far as included drivers is concerned)...

Unless you have specific software that requires 64bit, installing a 64bit version of windows has no advantage. The only real advantage to having a 64bit processor at the minute is due to the 32bit processing on them being so amazingly fast.

This may sound somewhat harsh but if you have built a whole new system with a fancy new graphics card, athlon 64 fx57, etc just for Vista, unfortunately you have probably wasted your money.

When Vista is released at the end of next year it will be using DirectX 10, which no hardware currently supports and can only run DirectX 9 applications through software rendering. This will require a significant increase in processing power required, and I can't see this sort of power being provided cheaply until next summer (which is when I am planning on getting my next system build).

Anyway, that's the end of my ramblings :)

In short, unless you have specific needs for 64bit processing I'd stick with the 32bit version of Windows XP.
