You have a couple worms and trojans

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegSvr32] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe

I'll go with this being trojan smitfraud/ worm w32agobotnl.html

    http://wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=75890

Please run hijackthis in safe mode with all other windows closed, choose scan only, and select the following and choose fix if they are still listed
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegSvr32] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\intell32.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - c:\windows\SvcProc.exe (file missing)

    Locate and delete the files
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\intell32.exe
    c:\windows\SvcProc.exe

(Note on c:\windows\SvcProc.exe you may first have to go to start/ run and type services.msc and hit enter and locate System Startup Service and change it to disabled startup and click stop service to kill it).

Disable system restore and reboot , reenable system restore and post a new hijackthis log .
    How to disable system restore

It looks clean of nasties now.
I do have a few observations.

    1. You do not appear to have XP SP2, I do highly advise updating now that you are clean there are many security holes present on your system which will be patched by getting all windows updates including the service pack. In addition, it is just a matter of time until microsoft stops support for non updated machines.

    2. You have norton speed disk
    C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~2\SPEEDD~1\NOPDB.EXE
The big problem here is that each defrag utility has a different idea of what should go where. In the past Microsoft used nortons defrag as the basis of their defrag, so it sorted things in basically the same manner. But XP uses a variant of Executive Software's Diskkeeper Lite. This sorts things in a totally different manner. Some sort by name , some by date installed, some by frequency of use, some by file type etc. You see the problem? If you have two different ones, one which sorts by name and one by frequency of use they will just move things back and forth. The big problem is that windows defrag , based on diskkeeper runs in the background to "optimize your drive" , so does speed disk. Ever notice your drive starts a lot of activity when you are doing nothing? So either deactivate/ uninstall speed disk, or use tweakui
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
Start/ programs/ powertoys/ tweakui/ general (highlight but do not expand) and scroll down and uncheck optimize hard drive when idle. Use one or the other defrag utility, not both.
    You also have oo defrag
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\oodag.exe
Choose one of the three, you will be much happier and have a better running machine
Personally, I would stick with XPs built in one since it integrates with prefetch and other XP component features (Although most users of OO defrag swear by it )
But having all three running and conflicting must not be good at all.

    Deactivating speedisk

    Oshwyn,

I uninstalled oo defrag but was unable to deactivate/unistall speedisk. I even looked in the general section in powwetoys tweak ui but could not find the optimize hardrive when idle box to uncheck. Also, I bought this computer a long time ago at a yard sale and realized only recently that the windows xp version is not geniune :-( Is there a way I can purchase from someone a family sharing or corporate sharing copy. It is quite expensive to purchase a copy stand alone for an old machine as this.
