I removed my former ISP account when I switched ISP's. Don't ask why... I just did. Now I'm wondering... are all my saved emails gone with the removal of that account or do they still reside somewhere on my hard drive? Thanks.

What email program, and version, are you using? What operating system are you running? There is a good chance that your profiles are still there, but we need other information.

Nope. My profile is not located in that path for some reason. When I go to the
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles I do NOT get Application Data after user_name. Instead this is what I see:

    Administrator
    All Users
    HP owner

Now... Administrator I have: Cookies, Desktop, Favorites, Owner's Documents, Start Menu, and Windows

After All Users I have: Desktop, Favorites, Shared Documents, and Start Menu

After HP owner I have the same line-up as Administrator (see above). The path is not the same as what is given on Ramona's page.

    James,
if what you say is correct, then, you must not been able to access any of NS6/7, Mozilla and Firefox profiles. You don't have any Application Data folder?
Did you give a name when you registered? Is it possible that HP User is the one, and that you did not give it a name?
In order to be able to view hidden files, which are for all the programs in question, you must allow the entire drive to unhide them. Then, do a Search, including hidden files, and you should be taken to correct location, if you enter your account name, or failing that, you should be able to enter: Mail.

    James,

Did you follow the instructions on the Profiles Location page for Windows XP:
When you deleted the former ISP Mail Account, did you delete it in Mail & Newsgroups Accounts only? If so, you are in luck, and the Mail is still on the HDD. And of course, you have your backup, right? ;)

You're O.K., once you drill down to your Mail Account folder, you can copy your files from the previous ISP folder to the new ISP folder. Remember not to copy the MSF files. Only those files WITHOUT the MSF extension, e.g., Inbox, Templates, Drafts, Sent... Also copy popstate.dat (keeps track of message download), and rules.dat (for filters).

May I butt in and ask what is the function of HIDING files? It woulkd seem if someone is going to WinEx to see what is going on re some issue - it would NOT be a problem to see EVERYTHING

i.e.: Hells Bells -- show the show

    James,

Great to hear that you found the profiles! You have to love this site. I go to work and by the time I get home, two experts have solved your problem. May I add that I agree with Ramona about having a current backup of your profile. Always a good idea.

    Mike

You sure faked me out with that list of folders.
Function of hidden folders: to confuse people. We have seen an example above.
In theory, for security, but in practice, as effective as SMTP authentication to prevent Spam.
