    1. I have F-Secure security suite with firewall enabled SO should I disable Win XP firewall?

    2. How do I disable the Win XP firewall (if that is what I should be doing)? Thanks.

    1. Running Windows Firewall in conjunction with your F-Secure security suite shouldn't hurt a thing and as such I would recommend that it not be turned off.

    2. To access Windows Firewall settings; Open Control Panel and click on Windows Firewall. To learn more about Windows Firewall click on "What else should I know about Windows Firewall" link located at the bottom of the General tab.

in my book, u choose one firewall and turn off others. they can conflict and why run two for the same purpose? turn off the win firewall is what i'd suggest if u'r running any full blown firewall.

and i'd get a router. then u can not worry so much about firewall software.

Thanks... I sort of figured I would get this split in opinion and so you can see my own confusion. I've heard MVP's advise to turn off the Windows firewall if one were running another for the reasons cited. And I've seen a number of posters here in this forum advise to keep it turned on. Go figure. I've had it on for a few months now, seemingly with no problems so I guess I'll just leave well enough alone. But I do appreciate your taking time to advise. Thanks.

My only problem with software firewalls are:

    A. They can prevent sharing sources on the LAN. (Network printers dont play well with firewalls)

    B. They eat up resources and CPU cycles on your machine degrading performance.

Me personally as long as I'm behind a router I disable PF's (Personal Firewalls)

i do the same here. if i do put up an FW behind a router it's the win one. and it set scope to subnet only for anything i want to pass locally.
