I recently installed Spycatcher 2006 and noted that ProcessGuard generated the message "Protector.exe was blocked from terminating smss.exeâ€. Can anyone advise me regarding whether or not I should allow this termination?

I am confused by what appears to be conflicting info, whereby some spyware sites hint at removing smss, yet other sites indicate that it is a crucial system process, which it logically seems to be.

I would assume that Spycatcher would not be doing anything untoward and likely will restart smss after doing whatever, but these days I guess I am getting suspicious of just about everything, whether the intent is nefarious or potentially erroneous……

If smss.exe is in Winnt\System32 or Windows\System32 folder it is legit. If it is found in the %WinDir%\msagent\system folder than it probably is a trojan. Take a look to see where it is located.
