If I click on a shortcut icon on my desktop and some others,>Properties>
find target, I get the Search Box. In the past, I would get the file in
windows explorer. What did I tweak without knowing it?

Do you mean you literally wind up with the keyboard key F3 "search" tool/pane or explorer seems to be doing a search of your harddrive looking for the folder/file this shortcut is pointing to? Does this shortcut work when you use or click on it?

Reguardless of the ^above^ specific you can try the suggestions below:

If this association problem is just for one particular shortcut, it may be possible that the program folder or file it is pointing to is no longer on your harddrive or has been moved. If moved or removed the shortcut may be invalid. This would cause explorer to search for the file and either offer the nearest thing to it or offer to delete the shortcut. You should check the path the shortcut is using to see if it is correct. You may need to recreate the shortcut or correct the shortcut path you have.

Is this association problem just for all "shortcuts "? If so use the LNK association fix found here:
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
    and this one:
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_folder_open.htm

If this is for file/folder, as well, see this past post:
    http://windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=44054&highlight=search+opens

Keep in mind that using "system restore and a picking a recent restore point should also take care of any file association blooper you may have made.

    Edited.... :)

Had second thoughts about any explanation, I tried to type out. They even confused me by the time I got done. I will try this again later. Right now I'm disgusted with myself. Can you share that beer?

Since the last post I lost SEARCH for "files or folders" and "on the interner "
when I click on Search from START. When I click on them, nothing happens.
The other 3 work>Find Zip, Internet Audio and for People. Thanks for any help, Joe R,

My other 3 problems are still with me :( Now I'm looking for help
