I use Win XP home, SP-2. When I go to msconfig and look at my start up items(I only have about 6) How do I change the order in which they load? I use a web accelerator that wants to load early in the boot process and consequently if it tries to start before the PC loads the broadband connection it'll crash and really slow things up until it decides it needs an internet connection to load. Consequently I have to close it, wait for the rest of the start up process than restart the accelerator.
    Any ideas?

Jim, thanks. The Sureshot software is just what I was looking for. Now if I could figure out how to get my internet connection to load sooner, it'd be perfect. The accelerator still fails to load occasionally, but much better than it was. Looks like to me the internet connection is about the last thing to load and sometime the accelerator doesn't want to wait to initialize. Any suggestions on getting my broadband modem to cooperate and load sooner?
    Thanks again

floyd--Glad to hear SureShot was of help. Thanks for posting back.
Are you on a broadband connection to the internet or dialup? If broadband, you are "always" connected. What you want to be loading is your browser.
However, maybe some one else can offer some better advice.

Jim I have a satellite broadband connection, but it loads without my browser being opened. I can see the 2 little monitors in my systray show up when it finally comes on line or probably better said the computer finds it as it finishes booting up.

floyd--I know nothing about Satellite. Perhaps you should ask the Satellite ISP about this. I suspect your connection "always" on. It is the browser that you are trying load faster.

I have XP Pro with Cable Internet I do not have a web accelerator.

But I have done a bit of experimenting and found the the better thing to do is to wait till the machine gets booted and then connect to the Internet.

If XP Home is anything like Pro it takes SEVERAL minutes for it to FULLY load ready for use. I have watched the little red light on the Case and have seen it go out for a few seconds and then come back one for several seconds more. And if I even TRY to do anything before that light stops I CAN BE it BIG trouble.

And I have found with ALL Versions of Windows. Getting in a hurry at boot up can cause broblems. So I load as little as possible at startup.

And another thing I have learned.

Just because the screen/desktop is loaded it does not mean that Windows is fully loaded. I got in a hurry ONCE and had to do a System Restore.

some satellite connections and adsl connections require the use of installed software to initiate the connection at boot. for example, Direcway satelling requires a Direcway driver and connection app to load at boot, or at least it must be running prior to connecting to the direcway network Some dsl connections require connection software, for example verizon dsl needs to use a connection software.

Some dsl connections can forego the use of connection software IF the user has a broadband router that makes the connection in place of the software. Most routers have built in support for dsl connection and can be set to always on or manually connect or disconnect if idle for x minutes.

Direcway now has a modem available with built in router that can make the connection, eliminating the need for software connection drivers and apps, but not all direcway users have thios newer modem-router.
