New user trying to fix slow computer

    Admin note: I merged this thread with the one containing your HJT log. Easier to keep the entire problem in one place. One problem you had was that you did not provide any feedback to the original suggestions which tends to discourage others from continuing with suggestions.

    Now that we have the HJT log, I'm moving the entire thread to the security section.

    Can any of you pros out there help me with my slow Windows XP computer. It was not always this slow, but it is REALLY getting on my nerves now that it is just crawling along, internet and startup. Can you help me? If so, what info do you need?

    Hi libelula and welcome to the board. :)

    Because you are a beginner and I don't know how much you know about keeping you computer clean of junk, I am going to suggest that you download a program called HijackThis and install it. Run the program and click the top button 'Do a system scan and save a log file.'

    Start a new thread here in the security section, under Removing Spyware & Viruses, and copy and paste your Hijack This log into the new post.

    The experts there will be able to help you and also give advice as to anything else you may need to do.

    IMHO, I think this will be the fastest, most effecient way for you to proceed.

    Before doing what dopey suggested, I recommend you follow the instructions in this link.

    EDIT: The instructions in the link I posted above were written awhile ago. Therefore, the versions of Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE Personal in those instructions are incorrect. The current version of Spybot S&D is 1.4 and the current version of Ad-Aware is 1.06. After you have downloaded and installed those programs, be sure to get the latest definitions updates for each program before running scans of your computer. I think both programs have a "get updates" feature that you should use to get the updates.

    After you have followed the procedures outlined in the link I provided above, you can run HiJackThis and create a logfile to paste into a new thread in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

    Be sure to include a descriptive title for your new thread and include details in the beginning of your message describing your computer's problems and what actions you have already taken.

    If you post a HiJackThis log without first following the instructions in this link, the virus & spyware removal experts will probably tell you to follow those instructions anyway before they assist you with HiJackThis.

    Edit: I attached images below showing the steps to follow (in green) for updating Spybot Search & Destroy (outlined in yellow) and then scanning your computer (outlined in cyan). After performing step 2, click on the small squares displayed to place check marks in them before performing step 3. (Click on the thumbnails below to view the full-size images.)

    I use the "Pro" version of Ad-Aware so I did not create similar images for Ad-Aware SE Personal.

    THANK YOU! I will follow your advice to the letter and post the hijack log. Honestly, I don't understand the "computer language ", but I really want to learn to fix my own computer, and I thank you in advance for your help.

    libelula--You certainly should scan for spyware, but there are other possible reasons for slow operation. See here

    The first four posts may give you some ideas. Ignore the later posts, which are specific to Win98, but the earlier posts all could apply to you.

    You do have some items that will need fixing with Hijackthis so the first step is to move the program. It is in a temporary folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\WDAZK5E3\hijackthis[1]\HijackThis.exe
    and it needs to be in a normal folder of it's own.

    Create a new folder - maybe c:\hjt or similar and move Hijackthis.exe to the new folder. Make sure the copy in teh temp folder is gone and that you are running the program from it's new location.

    Post back when that is done and we can give specific directions to help your speed issues.
