When you format a drive a single partition is created by default. I am not sure off hand what the maximum partition size is in XP, but it is way beyond the capacity of your drives.

The partition size I suggested for XP is a convenient size to allow for the installation of a large number of programs - FWIW my XP partition is 25 Gb with only 5 Gb free.

You do not have to make a separate partition for XP, but if you do you have a safety belt. The XP partition can be reformatted and XP reinstalled clean without affecting the other partition(s) on the drive, in which your data should be stored. In other words your data remains 'safe'.

Yes, the screens will be the same, except for the word 'Professional'.
You can, but as I posted ....
Partitioning is nothing to be afraid of :)

More info - you cannot repartition a drive in XP using Disk Management once you have created a single partition, which fills the disk, during the installation process. You will need to use some third party software such as Partition Magic.

I 100% go along with PeteC.

If you only have once partition and you have to format to reinstall the OS you can lose Months, even YEARS worth of downloads and other saved data.

That is unless one has saved them to CDs or some other place.

In fact 95% ( if not higher ) of all my programs are installed on other than C:

The guy that has experiened a BIG LOSS once. That was enough. And that was WAY back in the days of DOS/Win31.

Yes, or a similar program. Parition Magic is the one I happen to use.
Yes, but please understand what I have already posted - if, and this is recommended, you format the drive during the installation of XP a single partition covering the whole disk will be created - that is the way disks work.
Back it up again before you install XP - it will have changed - you will have added more data to it I am sure.

If your D:\ drive is your second hard drive you can disconnect it while you install XP - to be sure that you put XP onto the right drive :)

I am well aware of that, but when you boot from the XP CD you will be shown all the drives on which you could install XP (XP can be installed on another drive (or partition :)) when 98 is already installed). The suggestion to disconnect the D:\ drive was only a precaution to ensure that you installed it to the C:\ drive on which 98 is currently installed - the initial format will wipe out 98. I would not want you to install to the D:\ drive in error, wiping out your data in the process of formatting and to end up with both 98 and XP installed as a dual boot system. You told us that you wanted to replace 98 with XP - not to have both Operating Systems available.

That is what I understand also. SO !

Why not just install XP right over top of the existing OS ? Just need to be sure that it does go into the EXISTING Windows folder. ( normally C:\Windows ) but check first to make sure.

You have NOTHING to lose because if you format you will lose everything anyway.

And for further confusion. The HD that I am on right now with XP Pro started out ( on another machine ) with Win95b and has not been formated since.
