There may be something about those planets (I had just read Odile's thread).
In first place, Thunderbird has been the only program of the gecko persuasion which did "lose" it before. In mid-May, I gave up, after not being able to see my mail, and created a new profile. It is a pain, because I had 12 accounts (several localhost accounts). All was well until this morning. The program opened normally, but when I tried to open one message, it would not open. And, no other message, in any account would open.
So, I closed TB, and went to my profile, and deleted the inbox.msf of all accounts. After reopening TB, I got nothing but a partial toolbar, with no File, nor Edit. The address book was fine, but no account was visible.
I closed TB, and installed the new 1.0.7, just made available at the Mozilla site . Still nothing. So close TB, and back to the profile. Since there was nothing of any importance in the Chrome folder, which is rebuilt, I figured that I had nothing to lose by deleting it. And, there is my TB 1.0.7 in all its glory!
It is possible that I did not need to create a new profile last May, but I got a new target for possible evils, the Chrome folder.

If you delete that folder you may as well delete the entire Thunderbird folder, and forget about it. I did not give a path because it will vary with everyone. But this is your Profile folder. It is funny that I had a similar question as yours when I had bolded the word profile to make sure that no one causes any disaster. I learned the hard way, long ago, when I deleted the program file folder. The path in XP would be:C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\profilename\chrome
