Do newly created shortcuts work? Do the shortcuts accessed via the Start button function? Have you run a virus scan?

    Thanks

Hi, I am thanks full to u for reply, However , I used system restore and problem resolved , Is it still to be understood that there was a virus ? as I remember had not logged on or opened any email when this happened , before this happening I had tried to delete one photoU lead programm from Add/ Remove which was not getting removed , so I reinstalled it and then removed it. That's all
Need to know should there had been virus does it get resolved with system restore/

    Bye

Did you use the XP/ME Restore feature? If so, then it's possible that the virus was also backed up and restored.

Download and scan (from DOS) with a copy of F-Prot for DOS (it's free!).

As Brett has already suggested, you've got a virus. And as mentioned, if you're using the restore feature.....you're going to have to purge that as well.
    Free online virus scanners:

    Grisoft
    Housecall
    Panda
    Symantec

    And for Trojans.....might I suggest:
    Tauscan

Thankyou both of u for guidance , sorry had tried but no virus detected, need to know should i run it in existing working condition or revert back to infected condition by restoring .

Could u give thought to possibillity on missing dll shared file leading to this problem,if so what check should be performed.

    Bye

    Hi panchal.....
We'll have to take your word on it that you're not infected....but it sure sounds like you are. If you're sure it's just the exe problem......you can always use the Exe fix from here

    culprit located

    Hi diazy and others,

Thanks for your help , I am glad to inform that I had found culprit to this issue I t is not a virus but something to do with trial version of ULEAD PHOTOIMPACT 7 a software supplied by Indian magazine by name DIGIT . Accidently when I again started working after resolving earlier issue with this subject by system restore .When.my 30 day trial period expired for ULEAD PHOTOIMAPCT7 so I thought to reinstall from CD. it did got installed but situation reverted as before
viz. all program shortcut missing and *. exe untracable and I am not able to start any program. I logged to event viewer in which I also found a message that attempt to dislodge windows file was made files are protected etc.

What has happened and how to solve and fix this?
