I am using XP. I was looking for the Windows backup program. I find directions to the program on the Windows web site. Start - Accessories - System Tools - Backup. It is not there. How may I get this program?

My Computer (Or Windows Explorer) right click on the partition/drive to back up, choose Properties, Tools tab, then Back up.

This is not always the best back up option available.

    Hi Ron,

Ntbackup.exe is on the XP cd: Valueadd\Msft\Ntbackup folder.

    Hi Ron,

Sorry, Haven't been thru the exercise in a long time.

Navigate (Browse cd) to Valueadd\Msft\Ntbackup and double click on NTBACKUP.MS - that'll install Ntbackup.exe and it'll be accessible thru system tools.

    Regards - Charles

Why is Old Salty needing to extricate the back up utility from the cd? It should be included on the XP Pro install by default. Why is it missing?

OLDSALTY--You should be looking for NTBACKUP.MSI instead of NTBACKUP.MS . It probably is on your harddrive already. Do a search.

    Two things to check:
    1. Make sure Windows is not hiding files
    2. Check permissions
You probably saw this in "Help" already.

My start menu shortcut in XP Pro points to %SystemRoot%\system32\ntbackup.exe. I'm running an Administrator Profile.
That would be on the Desktop- All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Backup.
I haven't used it in years so had to go searching for it. Used to use it to make the ERD's for Windows 2000.

OK, here is what I did. I borrowed a neighbors Windows CD and found the files where they should be. I now have backup installed. I will call the manufacturer of the computer and get a windows CD. I only have the disks that came with the computer. I read somewhere that they have to provide you with Windows CD if you ask. So I will ask tomorrow.
    Thanks for all the help!

    Hi Ron,

I only have the disks that came with the computer.
    Ok, that answers one mystery.

I will call the manufacturer of the computer and get a windows CD. I only have the disks that came with the computer. I read somewhere that they have to provide you with Windows CD if you ask.
Could you let us know whether that's true and that actually happens. I run into this issue all the time - fixes that involve repairing the installation and anything to do with the Recovery Console or getting to a command prompt on boot failures can't be done because no XP cd.

    Still one more mystery:
    Regards - Charles

It was number 5 on that link, and no there wasn't any ntbackup.anything on the computer. The disk that came with the pc had ntbackup.ex_ and ntbackup.hl_
