BUT if I click on Local Disk D:, and then click on the Rebecca folder in there, the Favorites star is there, along with Rebecca's Documents1.

    Okey, try this:

Have You moved the My music and My pictures folders into Rebecca's Documents1?

If so, delete Rebecca's Documents1. It can be restored from the Recycle bin.

Now, restart the computer, cross Your fingers and hope that the folders DO get recreated in the desired location.

I deleted Rebecca's Documents1 (yes, My Music and My Pictures were in there). Restarted the computer, but My Documents (the icon on my desktop) is still empty.
FYI, under C:\Documents and Settings there are now four folders: All Users, Default user (though that folder isn't all "fully" colored as the others), Gary, and Rebecca. That Default user wasn't there yesterday...
What do you say I try starting from scratch again - go back to your DELPART instructions, reinstall Windows, reinstall the drivers, and then see if I can do this correctly over the weekend?

Have You made changes to show hidden files and folders? Does that folder have a more pale-ish yellow clour?

I have no idea how to correct the current situation and I honestly believe it would be quickest to start from square one.

I will be around (if You are still talking to me) intermittently during the weekend. (When I'm out, You're probably sleeping.)

I think I'll go ahead and start over. Good practice for me to familiarize myself with partitioning and reinstallation of WindowsXP, and hopefully I will have learned from my mistakes.
Would you please refresh my memory once more as to when I use the DELPART diskette vs. the WinXP installation CD?

One more thing - I'm still not fully clear on the following step:

My Documents is moved by [in Windows Explorer] creating a new My Documents folder on a different drive. Right-click the desktop icon, choose "Properties" and then "Move ". Point to the desired location.

So I'm supposed to create a new folder called My Documents on D:\ (as opposed to moving the desktop icon there)?
Will that be within the folder called Rebecca (which I believe is created when I tell the computer that there are going to be two users, Rebecca and Gary)?
When you say "right-click the desktop icon" and move it, I will be actually moving the "my documents" icon into D:\ where? Just D:? Into the My Documents folder that I will have already created on D:?

Insert the floppy (Win98 or WinME start disk + DELPART) in the FDD (Floppy Disk Drive).

Restart the computer, it will boot from the floppy. Tell it "no CD-ROM support ". At the A:> command prompt, type: DELPART > enter

DELPART will start. Follow the prompts and do it like the previous time. When the final question comes up (about not yet written to disk), the answer is YES.

Take out the floppy and insert the XP-CD in the tray. Restart the computer, it will boot from the CD. Follow the prompts, create the partitions and have it full format NTFS the system partition [C:].

Go back to starting fresh with a new computer and find the posts detailing how to reassign drive letters in Disk Management.

In Disk Management, don't forget to full format NTFS the second partition [D:].

You shouldn't be in the desktop at all, the instructions say "in Windows Explorer "!

The instructions are written for presumptive Ghost users who have a degree of experience. I am currently re-writing them in more detail (almost click by click).

On D:, nothing gets created when You are telling the computer that there are two users. It gets created in C:\Documents and Settings\Rebecca and in C:\Documents and Settings\Gary

I have never said to "right-click the desktop icon" and move it. You have consistently missed the text "[in Windows Explorer]" in the instructions.

Please go back to the very basics for me for a sec. When I click on Start in XP, a box comes up on the left hand side with my name at the very top, and then two columns. The right column has icons for My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, and My Computer. I was thinking that was where I accessed Windows Explorer (through My Computer)...

Honest, I'm NOT trying to give you a hard time - I'm just trying to make this clearer in my mind before my next go-around. But post #33 does say to right-click the desktop icon.
When I was installing the drivers with the Dell tech support people, they had me do something that made IE, My Documents, and My Computer show up on my desktop. At that point, I may have started treating the desktop icon as if it were the one in that original screen than comes up when I first click on Start...

That is the Start menu in which You have access to all Your programs and personal folders plus a variety of other stuff.

If You click Start > hover the mouse pointer over "All programs" > a menu will appear > here You can start Your programs.

There are several ways to open Windows Explorer, I mentioned four ways in an earlier post.

The way You should do it when working with folders is:

On the desktop > Right-click the "My computer" icon > choose Explore

If You can not see a "My computer" icon on the desktop:

Right-click anywhere on the desktop > choose "Properties" > click the "Desktop" tab > choose "Customize .." > check the boxes to display all desktop icons.

    Christer

    By the way,
it is likely that I use the wrong terminology in english from time to time. My own computer "speaks swedish" and I don't get the translations right all the time but hopefully some times.

Yes but not ... and move it!

I said "Right-click the desktop icon, choose "Properties" and then "Move "." In the next version of the instructions it will read "... and then choose "Move" or something like that.

As I said, I am re-writing the instructions in more detail and they will hopefully become easier to follow and understand.

    Christer

    By the way,
the "desktop" is what You have with the computer freshly started, nothing opened.

Christer, your English is awesome, that's not the problem. I'm good at the things I know how to do, but this is obviously stuff I'm not familiar with. I am sure you're right when you pointed out that I must have left-clicked and moved something earlier rather than right-clicked it. In the four years I've had my WinME computer, I don't think ever right-clicked anything to move it, so I'm having to re-train my brain. I think I've gotten that particular bit straight now.

At any rate, I'm going to try to make time this weekend to repartition the new computer and reinstall WinXP, and I think once I do that I'll wait until I can hook up with you again here before I proceed from there. [I have to work most of the weekend, so this might not all happen until early next week.]

I really appreciate your patience and perseverance with me on this! I'll try to listen / follow instructions better the next time around! Tack tack tack!

Have a good weekend, and enjoy resting your brain after this exercise in frustration for you!

That suits me well. It gives me time to rewrite the instructions and run the new version by a few friends here on the Windows BBS.

Well, not complete relaxation ...... :p ...... I have some re-writing to do!

Thanks for the compliments ...... :) ...... but on at least one occasion You wrote someting like "I don't have that but I have ..." and soon after that, You were heading into System Restore ...... ...... and I sat there wondering what Your next post would contain ...... :p ...... !

That's what I mean. It may add to the confusion.

    Hi Christer,
Well, it took me 3 tries, but I finally got it right! :) What I was doing wrong was that I was not creating a NEW "my documents" folder within my Rebecca and Gary folders on D:
Your instructions were correct, but I was misreading/misinterpreting them. I thought that by moving the My Documents icon [in Windows Explorer] from C: to D:, I was creating the new folders.
Once I realized that my aim was to move the "My Documents" icon into D:\Rebecca\My Documents (in other words, a My Documents folder within another My Documents folder), everything fell into place.
I won't tackle anything else until we're both online, so that hopefully I'll do better with moving the OE stuff (mail, address book), TB and FF!
Thanks again for your patience in getting me this far!

    Hi Rebecca,
as I said in post #57:

I actually hoped that you would wait for the more detailed instructions which I am currently working on.

When you read them it will become clear that "your way" has not been suggested by me in any of the previous posts. It is possible that it worked but it has to be verified.

    Christer
