A piece of information while in idling mode:

A left-click drag-n-drop will copy a file when dragged from one partition to another. To move the file, You have to right-click drag-n-drop and when the mouse button is released, there is a popup menu > choose move here.

I believe a mistake was made since there was a copy of one of the folders but that may also be due to Your attempt to copy several folders with the same name to the same location ( the root of D: ).

    Logged in as Rebecca:
Local Disk D: has 4 folders:
    Copy of My Music
    Gary
    My Pictures
    Rebecca
When I double-click on Rebecca, there are 2 folders:
    My pictures
    My music
When I double-click on Gary (still logged in as Rebecca, though), there are also 2 folders:
    Gary's pictures
    My music

    Logged in as Gary:
Local Disk D: shows the same contents as for me (above)
When I double-click on Rebecca, the subfolders are called:
    Rebecca's Music
    Rebecca's Pictures
When I double-click on Gary, the subfolders are called:
    My Music
    My Pictures

Is it of any importance that when logged in as Gary, D:\Rebecca's subfolders are called Rebecca's music and pictures, whereas when logged in as Rebecca, D:\Gary's subfolders are called Gary's pictures and My music?

The folders still look the same to me, i.e. yellow.

The folders within the "My Documents" folders open fine both logged in as Gary and as myself. When you say to delete everything outside of the Gary and Rebecca folders, you mean on D:, right?

    Yes, it is.

When logged in as Rebecca, is Gary's "My documents" called "Gary's documents "?

When logged in as Gary, is Rebecca's "My documents" called "Rebecca's documents?

The next post will contain a screenshot from my (Christer's) computer.

Yes but wait until we have sorted this!

This is how my screen looks after double-clicking the My computer icon.

    Min musik = My music
    Mina bilder = My pictures

You notice the difference in appearence between those and e.g. "Adobe "!

When logged in as Rebecca, when I double-click on My Computer, there are 3 categories:

    Files Stored on This Computer
under this are Shared Documents, Gary's Documents, and Rebecca's Documents [this is the only place where the actual labels "Gary's Documents" and "Rebecca's Documents" appear]

    Hard Disk Drives
    Local disk C:
    Local disk D:

    Devices with Removable Storage
    A:, X:, and Y:

If I double click on Local disk D:, there are 4 folders:
    Copy of my music
    my pictures
    Gary
    Rebecca

I see what you mean about the folders...
In Rebecca, the My music and My pictures folders have a music note and a picture 'embedded' in the folder icon.
In Gary, only Gary's pictures has the little extra there. Looks like what you said about my having left-clicked rather than right-clicked makes sense. The 'Copy of my music' folder on local disk D: does have the music note embedded in it. So I think that's the one that should be in Gary's folder, not the one that I moved in there. Please advise if I can just switch those around.
I have to leave for a meeting shortly, and it must be past your bedtime by now, so if that's all for today, I thank you again and wish you a good night!

Delete the My music folder in "Gary ". Move Copy of My music to Gary and rename it My music.

I hope that everything is correct now.

That must be in Windows Explorer, not after a double-click on My documents on the desktop, right?

    If so, it looks normal!

At the risk of repeating myself (deliberately):

It is important to move folders belonging to the logged in account only. Moving these so called "shell folders" are accompanied by automatic changes in the registry.

If, logged in to Gary, You move the Favorites folder belonging to Rebecca, there is a chance that the changes in the registry don't happen correctly. (I don't know and when I don't, I play it safe.)

It takes some time to log out from one account and log in to the other but it may be time well spent.

The next folder to move is Favorites, from "Documents and Settings" to the respective folder on D:. Move it into D:\ "name ", not into D:\ "name "\My documents.

Right-click, drag-n-drop, when button is released > choose move here.

There is a simple way to check in the registry if everything gets right but that's for tomorrow, if You're up to it.

    >>Delete the My music folder in "Gary ". Move Copy of My music to Gary and rename it My music.
OK, that worked like a charm.

    >>That must be in Windows Explorer, not after a double-click on My documents on the desktop, right?
That was after a double-click on My Computer (as opposed to My Documents).

    >>It is important to move folders belonging to the logged in account only.
I think that may be the ONE thing I've been doing right all along. But there might have been a problem early on, before I realized that clicking "switch user" wasn't logging off the original user (i.e., the computer was keeping both users logged on simultaneously). Since making that discovery, though, I've been sure to log off as a user before logging on as the new user.

Favorites have been moved to both the Gary and Rebecca folders on D:, but in Rebecca's it is 1.04 KB in size (contains 8 files, 1 folder), while in Gary's it is 122 bytes in size (contains 1 file, 0 folders). While logged in as Gary yesterday, I opened Internet Explorer before moving his Favorites (and then I had to go through an internet connection wizard) - could that explain the difference? [I have yet to open IE while logged on as Rebecca.] Or might it have something to do with my messing things up when I initially went ahead and impatiently (and unwisely, I know. I think I've learned my lesson now!) moved Gary's Favorites back to C: \ Documents and Settings \ Gary ?

    >>The next folder to move is Favorites, from "Documents and Settings" to the respective folder on D:. Move it into D:\ "name ", not into D:\ "name "\My documents.
There appears to be a problem with this one.
When I double-click on My Computer (not My Documents!), and then double-click on Local Disk D:, three folders show up:
    Gary
My Pictures [which I think I can probably delete, but I will be patient today!]
    Rebecca

I moved the Favorites folder as you instructed, into D:\ "name" (note: D:\ "name "\My documents doesn't show up as an option).
But when I double-click on the Rebecca folder on Local Disk D: now, the contents are the same as those that show up when I double-click on "My Documents" while logged on as Rebecca. Same holds true for Gary.
So Favorites ARE in our "My Documents" folders, even though that's not what I was trying to do. Should I have a "My Documents" folder within each of my Gary and Rebecca folders?

    Rebecca,
good morning ...... ...... or are You still awake?

Double-click "My documents ", double-click "My computer ", right-click "My documents" > explore, right-click "My computer > explore, all these start Windows Explorer but the composition of the window is different.

Like the other folders we have moved, Favorites is a special, so called "shell folder ". It should look like a yellow star for the account logged in.

Opening a "virgin" Favorites in IE should show a few links and a folder named links. If the computer is set to show hidden files and folders, it also shows a file named "desktop.ini ". It is "desktop.ini" that makes it look the way it does.

Your Favorites seem normal but not Gary's. What is left in "Documents and Settings "?

If You log in to Rebecca and Gary in turn, open IE and click on Favorites, for Gary, I don't know how it will look. If it looks like Rebecca's then his Favorites doesn't default to D:\Gary but elsewhere (probably recreated in Documents and Settings).

You have to double-click "name" to get into the subfolder "My documents ".

That's not a real problem, I just don't like having them there. The question is which Favorites folders are there. It seems like they are scattered all over the place.

Yes, but the quote below indicate that You do:

If not, both accounts default to the "My documents" folder within Rebecca (I think).

Check out the appearence of the Favorites folders, are they normal or star-shaped?

Check by, logged in to each account in turn, by on the desktop right-clicking the "My documents" icon > Properties > check the path to the target.

    Christer

Maybe we should rename it to "Whos documents" ...... :D ...... just kidding!

    Hi Christer,
Just back from work. My 4:30AM post was one of those get-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night-because-something's-on-your-mind things - I was tossing and turning over the Favorites stuff, and wanted to post it and get it OUT of my mind!
Anyway, looking back at your latest posts:
    >>Like the other folders we have moved, Favorites is a special, so called "shell folder ". It should look like a yellow star for the account logged in.
Yes, Favorites shows up as a star, in both G's and R's My Documents folders (regardless of whose account I'm logged into - in other words, when I'm in under Rebecca, Favorites in both my "My Docs" and Gary's "My Docs" show up as stars).

    >>Opening a "virgin" Favorites in IE should show a few links and a folder named links.
Logged in as Gary, when I open IE and click on Favorites, it shows "Add to Favorites ", "Organize Favorites ", and a folder named Links (which is empty).
Logged in as Rebecca, when I click on IE, Favorites shows the Add to and Organize Favorites, a folder named Links (which contains Customize links, Free hotmail, Windows, Windows marketplace, and Windows media), plus MSN.com and Radio Station Guide.
I don't know how to show hidden folders on XP - I'm a little disoriented by how different everything looks in XP from Windows ME.

    >>What is left in "Documents and Settings "?
C:\Documents and Settings now has 3 folders: All users, Gary, and Rebecca.

    >>You have to double-click "name" to get into the subfolder "My documents ".
    When logged in as Rebecca:
    if I double click on D:\Rebecca, I see My Music, My Pictures, and the Favorites star;
If I double click on D:\Gary, I see Gary's Music, Gary's Pictures, and the Favorites star.
When logged in as Gary, if I double click on our respective D:\name folders, his items are called My music and My pictures (and favorites), and mine are called Rebecca's Music and Rebecca's Pictures (and favorites - no user name associated with any of the Favorites).
Bottom line is that I seem to be missing the My Documents subfolders you mention. If this is truly the case, can I just go into Gary's folder and create a Gary's Documents folder within that, and then move his My Pix, My Music and his Favorites star into that? (And do the same for myself?) Yet as mentioned earlier, Gary's Documents and Rebecca's Documents folders DO show up under "Files stored on this computer ", and their contents are identical to those of the Gary and Rebecca folders on D:

    >>Check by, logged in to each account in turn, by on the desktop right-clicking the "My documents" icon > Properties > check the path to the target.
Under Gary, right-clicking My Documents > Properties shows Target folder location as D:\Gary
Under Rebecca, the Target folder location is D:\Rebecca

I think I've covered all the points you brought up; your turn now! :D

    Hi Rebecca!

I was just about to go out for a while but first things first. Everything seems OK with one exception and I'm afraid I could have been clearer in my instructions:

Yes, it seems like that but I "told" You to create one ...... ;) ......

...... and that explains how the Favorites folders ended up in the (non-existent) My documents folder(s).

Anyway, You can leave it as it is or correct it. I would recommend correcting it. Let me know what You want to do!

I've got to go for an hour or so.

For each user, I have gone into My Computer, D:\ "name ", and created a subfolder called Gary's Documents1 and Rebecca's Documents1 (didn't know if it might be important to somehow differentiate between these new "My Document" folders, and those folders already having those names that show up under "Files stored on this computer" (the screen that comes up when I double-click on My Computer). Please tell me I've done this right! If not, it should be easy to undo, at any rate (at least I've finally "gotten it" about right-clicking to move things!).
Incidentally, I've been digging around at the Microsoft support site, and I found the following: "Fast User Switching is enabled by default in Windows XP Home Edition ". That answers that question!! Seems like potential for major confusion, though, so I'm going to keep logging off between users.

    Addendum:
Now when I double-click on the My Documents icon on my (Rebecca's) desktop, there's the Favorites star, and folder called Rebecca's Documents1. I'm getting confused here... (okay, so I already was confused before, too!)

    Hi Rebecca,

I'm just going to post around the periphery - getting ready to go away and don't want to get involved in long threads.

I don't know how to show hidden folders on XP

The same way as in WinME actually - bring up the drive > tools > Folder options > View tab and tick "show hidden files and folders ".

I would keep this option on, at least until you're squared away.

There is another option to show protected system files if you ever need that on.

The help and Support applet on the start menu is a lot better than in 9X, so explore that. If you type in Hidden into the search box, it would have given you the answer.

    Regards - Charles

    Rebecca,
what You did was unfortunately not right but it doesn't hurt.

You obviously want a My documents folder for each of You and what I will suggest will not hurt either (even if I'm wrong).

Log in to Rebecca, on the desktop, right-click My documents > properties > restore standard ... > apply > if You're asked to move the contents > NO > OK.

On the desktop, double-click My documents. If You have a My music folder and a My pictures folder, then it was a success. If not, post again.

If it was successful, log out Rebecca, in Gary and repeat for his account.

Create a My documents folder each in D:\Rebecca\ and D:\Gary\. Name them both My documents. You can create both logged in to Gary or to Rebecca.

If You're still logged in to Gary, on the desktop, right-click My documents > properties > move > navigate to D:\Gary\My documents > OK > apply > if You're asked to move the contents > YES > OK.

On the desktop, double-click My documents. If You have a My music folder and a My pictures folder, then it was a success. If not, post again.

If it was successful, log out Gary, in Rebecca and repeat for Your account.

Back to Favorites while I'm idling:

Somehow, Gary's links (shortcuts not the subfolder) were lost but it doesn't matter. If it looks like a star, it still contains the important hidden file "desktop.ini ". (I actually delete all those links because I will never use them.)

I didn't see a restore standard, so I clicked on restore default > apply > No (to moving the contents) > OK
Now when I double click on the My Documents icon, there's nothing there.

Try restarting the computer. The folders should get recreated (by Windows) if missing.

I'm talking about the "My Documents" icon on my (rebecca) desktop - I rebooted, but it's still empty.
