    Hi
    Ive installed a new hard drive and cloned the old one. What should my boot ini look like to have the option to boot from the new drive? Ive tried adding 1s and 2s to the multi, disk and rdisk but no combination seems to work at the mo. The last one i tried was

    [boot loader]
    timeout=5
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
    multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

    thanks Steve

    Hi Steve!

    Is it Your intention to substitute the clone for the original?

    Has Windows been started with both harddisks connected?

    If so, which was master and which was slave?

    At the moment I just want it for a back up, and it is the slave on the same cable. When I get it to boot I may use it as the master, I havent decided.

    Okey,
    let's see if I understood this:

    You have cloned the master HDD to the slave HDD and both are connected, right?

    If so,
    the bad news is that having the original and the clone connected at the same time means that two identical HDDs have been connected and Windows won't have that. Each volume on a HDD has an identifier, given to it by Windows. Having an original and a clone connected at the same time means that two or more volumes have the same identifier. At first start with both HDDs connected, Windows will change the identifiers on the clone (if, as in Your case, the computer still boots from the original). This renders the clone not bootable.

    You have not mentioned which utility was used to clone but I use Ghost from DOS. When a Disk-to-Disk has been done, it is important to shut down the computer and remove one of the HDDs from the computer before restarting. The original alone will boot and the clone alone will boot but if both connected, the above will happen.

    If You want to store the backup on an online HDD, do a Disk-to-Image. The Image won't be bootable but it can be restored to any HDD which will become bootable.

    I have never done it but there is a way to fix the clone. Connect it as master (and remove the original), start the computer from the XP-CD and do a repair using FIXMBR or whatever the "command" is.

    Some people say that a Win9X start disk can be used and the command "fdisk /mbr ". However, Newt, a distinguished member of this forum, advices to not use "fdisk /mbr" if the file system is NTFS.

    thanks for the input. Perhaps clone was the wrong word to use I dont know, but what I wanted to do was back up the system as it is now. Anyway I think Ive sorted it. It would appear that I have been using the Maxtor utility in the wrong way, from dos instead of the win version. Now Ive used the windows version Ive been told that my registry needed changing for support for drives larger than 137 gb, which Ive now done. Using the maxtor utility i copied the files, changed the boot ini to the following and the new drive can now boot, hurrah.
    thanks

    I have never used the Maxtor utility and don't know "exactly" what it does but when someone mentions "windows version" in the context of copying/cloning one harddisk to another ...... :eek: ...... I get very suspicious.

    Was Windows and the Maxtor utility running on the harddisk which was being copied/cloned to the other harddisk?

    yes it was. The only thing it couldnt copy was a system volume information file, according to the utility.

    Thanks for the information.

    As I mentioned in a previous post, I use Ghost 2003 from DOS. I am also suspicious towards Ghost 9 and Ghost 10 which do things from within Windows ...... :rolleyes: ...... I'm not biased against the Maxtor utility itself!
