I got the same alert from McAfee yesterday about the puper.dll. Can't clean, quarantine, or delete. Would like to know how to get rid of this without a major problem.

    Hi Dennis,

I've moved your post to a new thread of it's own, so as to avoid any confusion in responses. Please post future responses to this topic here.

Would you please provide details of any/all problems you are experiencing, eg; name/location of infected file (if McAfee reports that), changes to desktop, popups, steps you have taken, etc.

I would also like for you to post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Dave

Thank you. I simply followed your advice from enrique86's thread. My desktop and the McAfee message were the same as his.
I downloaded the Ewido security suite and scanned my computer. It detected 20 problems and quarantined them all. Then I just deleted them from quarantine. End of trouble.
However I am VERY displeased with McAfee. It only detected one trojan and then couldn't delete, quarantine, or clean it. Ewido detected 20 and took care of them all. I will keep you posted on the status of my computer since I have only had a few hours to see if all is well.

    Thanks again

The problem is that Mcafee is primarily marketed as an antivirus program. While it does detect some major trojans, and can delete most of those it detects;and it detects and removes some spyware and adware; this is not what it is marketed as or built for.

This is why it is important to have more than just an antivirus.
You should have an anti trojan program such as ewido, or
    A Squared trojan remover

And you should have an anti spyware / adware utility.
    Spybot search and destroy
    Ad aware personal form Lavasoft

    A great read is
How did I get infected in the first place

So keep mcafee, keep it up to date.
Get an anti trojan and anti spyware program and keep them up to date.
Get a firewall or at least a router with NAT if you do not have one.
    Get a second browser
    http://www.opera.com/

    http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

And use the most appropriate one and follow tips on making it more secure (like turning off software install in firefox, or using your quick preferences to disable features you do not need in opera)
