I'm trying to accomplish something here but I don't know if I'm going at it the right way.

I have a file server in my basement that I use to store files and a very large music collection. I have Windows 2003 on this box and iTunes so that I can share the music to other computers in the mouse. This server behind a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.

For work and play I use an Apple PowerBook. When I'm in the house I can access my iTunes library and share files through SMB shares since I'm on the wireless network. What I'd like to do is connect to the network at home from school or friends' houses and still have access to the iTunes library and the file sharing on the server.

Is VPN the best way to do this? and if so, how do I configure it on the Windows 2003 box and what port do I need to open on my router in order to access the network from the Internet.

    Thank you

While you could VPN Ive done this before, Its still going to download the song, its not going to stream unless you set up a streaming service on the machine.

What I did is set it up as a webserver under a https:// address and then get into it that way.
