As with most members of a support forum, a problem with my computer has brought me to you. Hopefully, now that I am here, I'll be able to contribute some of my limited computer knowledge to help those I can.

As for the problem I am experiencing, well here it is.

It seems that all third party programs such as Real Player, see me as offline. I cannot connect to thier server, or they cannot connect to me. It is the same with my Madden 2006 updater. A Road Runner tech support agent said that she could not ping my computer which would indicate that I have a firewall enabled, but Windows firewall is disabled and I do not have a third party firewall installed. I have even went so far as to completely unload all of my Norton services to no effect.

I am using Windows XP Pro SP2, I have Road Runner Internet service using the Motorolla SB5100 Surfboard Cable Modem.

I am at my wits end trying solve this puzzle, so I come to you guys on bent kne pleading for your assistance.

    Thanks

    Griff

Moving this to networking since that is the area of concern.

Hi Griff and welcome to the forum. Do you connect directly to the broadband modem or do you have a router/switch?

Please open a cmd prompt (start->run->cmd and click OK). Then key in the following and post the contents of the text file you will create.

    ipconfig /all > c:\config.txt

Thanks for the welcome and the quick response.

I am connected directly to the modem, no router and I attempted to run the command you posted, but it is not creating the text file. I am attempting to fix that now.

Thanks. The only odd thing I see there is your DHCP server address. However, that should not be causing what you are experiencing.

Lets try for a 2nd set of numbers. Before you close down for the evening, from a cmd prompt, key in
    ipconfig /release then shut down.

When you start back up tomorrow, you may have the same IP address or the /release may have allowed the DHCP server to reassign your IP address so that you will get a new one. In either case, do
    ipconfig /renew followed by
    ipconfig /all > c:\config2.txt
    and post the new information.

I'll try some testing on your new address tomorrow. Can't do any this evening since I'm at work and our firewall will not pass a ping packet out of our LAN but at home I should be able to check a couple of things.

Exactly HOW did you disable the Windows Firewall? The service may still be running and active even though you disabled it via Control Panel. To completely disable it you also need to disable the service.

Try booting into Safe Mode w/ networking and see if OK.

Did you formerly have dialup? Or different network connection?
First , in IE tools/internet options/ connections make sure that there is not a different connection set as default. Change to never dial .

Then go to the individual programs program options and make sure it has been changed to use the new connection.

You may also need in XP go to control panel/ network connections (double click)/ advanced/ advanced settings and make sure that your current connection is higher than any others.

Everything looks fine, connection is set as higher.

I went into Safe Mode w/Networking and completely disabled Windows Firewall but am still experiencing the same problem. This is very odd.

Will keep searching for problems, all of your help is apprecitaed and anymore suggestions will be extremely well recieved.

    Thanks again

    Griff

OK. Windows Firewall is disabled. But exactly what Norton product do you have? Norton Internet Security? ONLY Norton antivirus? Which? Because Norton Internet Security does include a firewall that you may not be aware of having running. If have this then you must open that particular app and configure it to allow desired apps to connect.

    I cant find a Motorolla SB5100 Surfboard.
    I can find a 5101 and a 5120. Is 5100 the correct number?

Is your computer connected to the Surfboard via USB or Ethernet?

He should try a different computer if possible to confirm that it does work on a different machine...

10.X.X.X is pretty normal for cable modems for the DHCP Server (I know I managed 2 SUN boxes for a cable company for about a year)

Watch it ... that he's on a /21 CIDR that's 8 /24's rolled into one. Also pretty normal in cable modem land.

    IP Address : 65.32.143.40
    Address Class : Classless /21
    Network Address : 65.32.136.0

    Subnet Address : 65.32.136.0
    Subnet Mask : 255.255.248.0
    Subnet bit mask : nnnnnnnn.nnnnnnnn.nnnnnhhh.hhhhhhhh
    Subnet Bits : 21
    Host Bits : 11
Possible Number of Subnets : 1
    Hosts per Subnet : 2046

Subnet, Mask, Subnet Size, Host Range, Broadcast:

    65.32.136.0, 255.255.248.0, 2046, 65.32.136.1 to 65.32.143.254, 65.32.143.255

    * Should be able to ping his Default Gateway 65.32.136.1. There's no NAT here he has an actual routeable Internet IP Address. Also the Internet Provider should have his modem's 10.X.X.X IP Address in their management screens for his account. They should be able to ping his cable modem on that 10 IP Address. (Modem is basically acting as a transparent bridge. DHCP Server assigns both a 10.X.X.X IP Address to the Cable Modem itself, and an Internet IP Address to the Computer.)

Definately make sure all firewalling is off...

May want to first try the "netsh int ip reset > c:\reset-log.txt and see what that does... possibly other TCP/IP related repairs could be tried after. This could be a spyware/virus related TCP/IP Stack damage. Or some other application that damaged it.
