Sorry for a insignificant question here but it's got me scratching my head.

I have bought a matching pair of notebooks (for me and wife) with XP home.

They are set to English (British). On logging in, between the box where the password is entered and where the user name is displayed are the letters CY .

There is nothing visable on my desktop (XP Pro) there, so what on earth does it mean?

    Should I care?

I presume you are using a classic login requiring username and password as opposed to the welcome screen with icons where you just select yours and enter the password?

It sounds like OEM custom branding. Does the brand name of the laptop have CY in it?

No, we are using the welcome screen, we use restricted accounts for day to day use and an admin account only when necessary.

The computers are Fujitsu Siemens Amilo model laptops and you are probably right about branding as they are OEM XP's - I just hate not knowing about something on MY computer. :(

Here is an update to the question what is the CY for on the login page of XP.

It took a while but I have finally figured it out. :)

I noticed that Office stuff using the spellchecker would not check the spelling. I would re-set the default to (English UK) but every time I started the computer it all failed again. I then checked language settings which were English British BUT there is a sub-page for variations. and I discovered that the CY on the Log in Page refers to the computer has been set up for use in Wales (CYmru) ! We all speak English in Wales and of course there is no word dictionary for Welsh so nothing was happening.

What a pain! However, having discovered that, and reset to English (UK) the problem has gone - but I am still annoyed by the random decisions of WORD to change the default from English (UK) to English (US) and wonder if anyone can tell me how to get English (US) out of my default list to join the Welsh? I frequently fail to notice the sometimes less than obvious differences until after I have printed everything and I am not sure whether it is a XP of Office problem, The CY was definately down to a XP setup.

 Did I give that impression?

No! In the bin for Welsh. I am Welsh, but sense and reason and all that!

But How do I lose the default English (US) and just leave me with the other default English (UK)? They do keep fighting.

just a thought but ... where are checking/setting the language settings?

there's the region/lang settings in control panel and the MS office language settings in office tools.

u should probably also check that u've got a FULL install of office if u don't yet. or at least account for the extra tools maybe as they may come into play for european langs.

    Hi,

Yeah! I checked. Control panel, Regions and languages AND in the full install of Office I have English (UK) checked in as the sole default language.

But if I look in 'Set language' in Word, English (US) is still right there sitting in as joint default language. OK, thats is better than the Welsh which climbed on top of both of them, but it's still playing havoc with my spelling and I'm drawing criticism, which sort of negates having a spell checker. :(

The only way I can be sure that my document is in UK English is to check it myself as the two defaults seem to carve it up randomly between themselves.

on the word section for set language, is 'auto detect' ON? and have u selected English UK and hit 'set default'?

i have no idea what the above stuff does really ;) ... but it does store the defaults in the norm template i believe.

another shot in the dark guess = if u setup region/lang control panel's 'languare bar on desktop' toolbar, what shows up as options when u open word?
