Hello all. When I started my PC up today, McAfee notified me that it had found a virus, followed by another and so on. I was very shocked by this as I had no idea about it. I opened Internet Explorer, which instantly closed and my Desktop changed to this:

    Desktop

... I didn't know if this was genuine or not, but I soon realized that it was a scam. Every 15 minutes, a pop-up would appear telling me to install anti-spyware or pop-up blockers. I immediately ran Spyware Doctor which found 330 infected files. I deleted them all, re-booted, then McAfee told me that it has found a new Trojan called 'Puper.dll' or something similar and that I need to reboot to complete the deletion process. I did this and re-booted. This happened several times. So, I started up in safe mode, and scanned with McAfee, and it says it found nothing. Booted up again, and instantly it said

'McAfee has detected a virus on your system. Scan all drives'.

I don't have a clue what is going on, anyone got any ideas? I'm just going to run Spybot Search and Destroy.

Whilst writing this, this appears every 15 seconds to every minute:

    System Alert

Also, I have deleted temporary files and turned System restore off.

    Thank you in advance.

Also, this will appear every 30 or so minutes:

    System Warning

    Spyboy Search and Destroy said:

    'Congratulations!
    There are no immediate dangers'

Or something to that effect. All of my anti-virus scanners, pop-up blockers and PC etc are up-to-date.

    Hi enrique86,

First, I want you to turn System Restore back on and create a new restore point. This is so that you do have a restore point in case it's needed (computers can do the unexpected). It's better to have an infected restore point than none at all. ;)

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop. (description of the tool here)
Double click on the file and click start to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    1. Restart your computer
    2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping F8.
    3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" or anything similar if present.

    Reboot back into normal mode.

The smitRem tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post the contents of that log, along with a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply.

Note: If your Windows Theme reverts to Classic mode, open the desktop properties and change it back to XP on the Themes tab. You can also reset your desktop background at that time.

I'll check back in later tonight with further instructions.
