I am on a dial up connection, and when I start IE and connect to the internet, the computer locks up for about 5 minutes. During that time, I cannot open any other programs and IE is unresponsive. The mouse works, and I can sometime hang up and it will start working again faster. I have run Norton AV and found nothing, Spy Bot S&D finds nothing, and Ad-Aware finds nothing. Zone Alarm shows constant block of svchost.exe and Explorer.exe, but I don't know if that is a bad thing or not.

The computer seems to be loading slower and slower all the time. My kids play Runescape all the time, and lately I have been haveing a Runescape error showing up when I boot up. I don't think it is related, but I am no expert.

I will post my HJT log in a second post.

If you see anything that you think is causing the problem, let me know. At this point I am willing to kill anything.

    Thanks, Jeff

I see no obvious malware, but see several performance problems.

    C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~1\NPROTECT.EXE
With kids you may need this. Basically it makes backups of anything you delete . So that even if you delete something and empty the recycle bin it can still be recovered. If you do not need this disable by right click on reclycle bin and disable norton protection or do it from within system works (or whatever you have)

    C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~1\SPEEDD~1\NOPDB.EXE
This is nortons disk defrag drive optimizer. In Win9x/ME microsoft based windows defrag on the Norton product. But XP uses executive software diskeeper for disk management and it too runs in the background to optimize your disk. The problem is that each major defrag utility sorts files in a different manner. One may sort alphabetically, one by date of install or creation, one by file type or group or frequency of use or any combination thereof. Norton Speed Disk and Executive Diskeeper(XP defrag) use entirely different algorythms to decide what goes where. So you wind up having one program move a file to where it wants, and the other puts it back (ever see your hard drive start to get real active when you stop doing anythign?). So they sit there moving the same files back and forth and windows has to search for it .
You could either uninstall speeddisk, or you can turn of XP s built in disk optimization with Tweakui
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
    It installs to start/ programs/ powertoys ,
on the left side select general on the right uncheck optimize hard drive when idle (Note that if you choose this option you must use speed disk to defrag, not windows defrag)

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe
Are you running two firewalls? Norton Internet Security and Zone Alarm? If so choose one or the other and uninstall the one you do not use. Two firewalls (or two antivirus programs) is not better than one , it is worse, much worse.

Since explorer.exe and Internet explorer share many files in common this could indeed be a problem , likewise by blocking svchost.exe, all those items listed as 023 entries, like norton antivirus scanning incomming web pages get blocked. I suspect you have over managed your firewall.

IE stalling like this could be any of a number of things.
I would start by turning off the ZA firewall (You have dial up so this is low risk for a quick check since you have NAV risk is near nil) Make sure also that you have windows firewall off. See if that helps.
If not, turn on firewall and go to IE tools/ internet options/ general / temp internet files
delete files/ delete all offline content
settings/ view files and delete any cookies you do not need
    clear history.

On the homepage section , choose blank. THis allows IE to load without having to download a page from the web. If there is a problem with the page you use as home page, it can cause a very long load time.

    Go to tools/ manage addons
Uncheck them all and restart and try .
If it works fast, then add them back one at a time until you find the guilty culprit (closign and restarting between adding each one or block of them back.).

Thanks for the many bits of wisdom.

Okay, here is what I found so far. When I have the windows security center up, it says "At least one of the firewalls installed on this computer is currently ON." When I shut down Zone Alarm, it says; "Norton Internet Worm Protection is currently ON." When I turn off Norton internet worm protection, the status says the firewall is OFF. Should I leave the Norton Internet Worm Protection off and just use Zone Alarm, I have seen both block intrusion attempts so I am not sure.

I also turned off Norton recycle bin, I used PowerToys to disable Windows disk optimiser, I set the home page to blank, and I cleared all the cookies and offline stuff in IE tools. I am in the process of turning off the addons one at a time, I will let you know what I find.

It seems to be working better so far, thanks for the help.
    Jeff
