this is the 2nd time I have ran away from my regular e-mail software since 10 years ago, it happened to me one year ago just after accepting a windows xp home edition automated upgrade, that time I solved my trouble unmaking the upgrading and stopping any further automatic upgrading for my xp o.s., but I changed my mind recently and decided to face the problem, so I went ahead and accepted the service pack 2 automatically suggested by Microsoft, again my trouble is that I do not have e-mail any more, and when I double click in my Netscape Mail icon: nothing happen, would you be able to help me, please, I do not want to lost my 10 years old e-mail history..

    Thank you very much...

I have heard of many problems caused by sp2, and, found that it was not necessary, so I have never gotten it. I am not sure what it does to, selectively, affect mail. Can you use the browser part of NS7.2? I am asking this question because it is nor clear to me how you are trying to access NS7.2 mail. Do you have a separate shortcut, with -mail added to the Properties|Target line? Or, do you mean the small envelope within Netscape?
Take a lok at the profile location , and where you mail is located. It should be there. But, some clarifications are needed.

First on the agenda, find your mail profiles (via Explorer) and back them up.

Go into Start - Programs - and click on Netscape Mail.

    Side note
Be aware sp2 enables XP's built-in firewall automatically... this may cause problems if you have a 3rd party firewall active (XP should have seen it, unless 3rd party firewall is an outdated version).

    Hello luis,

Forgive me, but I'm puzzled why after ten years you haven't learned to backup your email.

    Regards - Charles

It is not so much backing up, but rather knowing where the mail is located, and the locations changed with the operating system, and not knowing about mail management, including compressing folders.

    Hi Westside,

If one asks themselves how do I backup my email and sets out to find out how, wouldn't that lead to:

knowing where the mail is located

the locations changed with the operating system

knowing about mail management, including compressing folders.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Westside,

Sorry about the blue highlighting, they are rhetorical questions for anyone that has yet to learn how to backup their data/email no matter what apps are being used.

I cringe every time I read something like what luis posted, who is understandably fearful of losing his data.

    Regards - Charles

Welcome to the Forum, luis felipe!

    luis felipe,

Have you checked the firewall to ensure that it isn't blocking your mail? That would be your first step in fixing this old problem.

Let us know the results and we can go from there...

Did you try to locate the folder which you mention, i.e. this path: C:Archivos de programa|NetscapeNetscape and double click on netscp.exe?
Do you really have NetscapeNetscape? All other paths are related to this one. If you don't get Navigator, nothing else will work?

    Luis Felipe,

We need much more information from you:

Are the Mail, Browser, Composer, and Address Book exe files shortcuts on the Desktop? Is this how you try to start each of the components?

Can you actually open the Netscape browser?

Do you have a backup of the Profiles folder? If not, back up that folder now, before we start editing files and folders...

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

    No, I can't open

Navigator, nor Composer, nor Address Book, nor email. I have both:

    c:\Documentos y Configuraciones\Luis F. Sierra Sosa\Datos de programa\Mozilla\Profiles\default\vc2bf58t.slt

    c:\\Documents and Settings\Luis F. Sierra Sosa\Datos de programa\Mozilla\Profiles\default\vc2bf58t.slt

    Luis Felipe,
I am not sure why you have, aparently, two paths, one of which is partly in English. I will place one after the other, first, Ramona's path, with additions which I will enter to match your path, and then your paths:

    1.C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\xxxxx.slt
    2.c:\Documentos y Configuraciones\Luis F. Sierra Sosa\Datos de programa\Mozilla\Profiles\default\vc2bf58t.slt
    3.c:\\Documents and Settings\Luis F. Sierra Sosa\Datos de programa\Mozilla\Profiles\default\vc2bf58t.slt

#2 and 3 are identical, except for c:\\Documents and Settings and
    c:\Documentos y Configuraciones
now, if you enter your own information in #1, the paths of 1 and 3 will be identical.
How did it get that way? Do you have two separate folders? That would make all the difference. What is the path in right click|properties|Target in the one which allows you to open Navigator? Is it the same as the Local Directory in Mail and News account settings, or you can't get into Mail at all?
This looks crazy, if it is like I see it.
