Got a call from a friend who is having trouble getting AOL to dial-up. I had them check the modem by dialing with Hyperterminal and it works. They were online last night and it doesn't work today. They updated Spybot, Adaware and AVG last night while online, so I had them run a scan with each. Adaware found a few things but Spybot and AVG came up clean. I'm posting their HJT log, hopefully someone will find something that may be causing their problem.

I do not see any problems in the hijackthis log.

Has he tried uninstalling and reinstalling the AOL software?

What exactly is the problem? Does he get an error code?
Does it not launch the modem? Does the modem not dial out?

I actually suspect the modem is the problem , even though hyperterminal works. A replacement modem or better yet an external hardware modem (internal modems are generally what is known as a winmodem or software modem where most of the work is done by software and the cpu not by the modem which just allows a physical connection to the phone line in this case).

    Oshwyn5,

I didn't see anything in the log that looked suspicious either, but wanted someone else to look at it. I suggested the uninstall/reinstall of AOL but they really didn't want to do that and end up losing all their favorites.

They said that it attempts to dial out then just quits. No error code or message, that's why they suspected some malware. I suggested the Hyperterminal test to see if the modem was able to dial out and it did. I kind of suspect the AOL software, not a big fan of it myself, but dial-up is the only way to go where they live and they like the interface that AOL provides.

Thanks for checking the log, I'll suggest the uninstall/reinstall again and see if that resolves the problem (if they decide to do it). If that doesn't do it I'll recommend a new modem.

    Thanks again for the help.

    Bill
