This was brought to my attention today and I wouldn't even know where to start to look at a semi-repair on this

The machine works fine apparently and I've tested it too but

If you remote into it, or sit locally at the machine

you get a all black screen with just the welcome to windows shown

If you hunt and peck your way around where the
    Login
    Password
    Domain

Boxes would be you can login, and the machine acts normal ... any thoughts on this one?

Have you tried sfc /scannow and chkdsk /f ?

    Have you tried ctrl+alt+del ?
This sounds like it was set to login requires ctrl+alt+del
so it hides the login box until you do that.

You can edit the registry or use the fix in X-setup from
    http://www.xteq.com

oh I know the ctrl - alt - del is there.

the output is all black is what i was showing in the screen shot, its like its blanking out the rest of the screen, however after hunting and pecking you can log in and then the default desktop shows.

This happens through RDP and if you locally sit at the machine.
It only happens on this one server, they are are all connected via a KVM switch, a 12 port switch, ive checked all connections and the rest of my servers all come up correclty. This is a new one I must say

Unable to offer help but stating that this has also happened to me (and still does once every 5 boots or so on a Windows 2000 Professional workstation), so it is obviously a wider problem.

After talking to Dell, they more or less said sorry about your luck and ***** to be me.

If anyone can help me figure this one out, that'd be great

    Found a fix to this,

    apparently everything under
    HKEY_USERS\.default\Control Panel\Colors was set to 0
had to go in and replace all of them with a new key and it fixed it, now why they were deleted is beyond me
