When I run a certain kids program the sounds get chopped off so that when the characters speak I only hear part of what they are saying. I poked around and found that if I went to the Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel and hit Advanced then Performance and then retarded the Hardware acceleration 2 notches all would be well.

The setting, however, does not stick and when I start up the next time the sounds are once again chopped off and I have to make the same adjustments.

Is there a way to make the changes stick?

I have installed the latest sound drivers for my onboard Realtek sound device.

    Thanks

Try making the change and shut down and reboot before you use anything which will use your sound .
Basically if you use anything, it can reset things to the setting in the registry (when the other program is opened or the one you are using is closed) rather than saving the change to the registry on shutdown.
