    Hi lanime,
Go to Hardware Manager and uninstall the mouse. It will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot. Let us know if this makes any difference.

Put the make and model of the mouse into a Google search along with "drivers ". Install the latest drivers if you find them.

Do you have a restore point from before using the UBCD?

A little hint from someone who has messed up a time or two.

BEFORE doing anything where you are going to be making changes it is best to make sure that you have a restore point.

And I find it is best to MANUALLY check to make sure there is one.

And even if there is one I usually make one anyway and NAME it. Something like " Before new Mouse driver. "

It has paid off quite well a couple of times.

lanime--No experience, but the first reference here makes me wonder if there is a possibility that UltimateBootDisk does contain spyware. I assume you know how to scan with AdAware or SpybotS&D. If not, post back.
Now, back to the title of your thread, if a viewer takes it literally.

Good point BillyBob. I generally classify things like mice and keyboards as "basic" which I would expect WinXP to have little trouble reinstalling. Things can go sour, even with those  . The more complex the drivers the more care should be taken, especially for someone without a lot of experience with them (I too, learnt the hard way :D )

I do not understand that at all.

?? WHY ?? delete the recent ones and keep the older ones ??

If you make changes on Tuesday and something goes wrong I can see no reason for using a RP that is further back than Monday.

Or better yet. One made Tuesday just before the changes were started.

You mentioned "investigating" the disk. Did you install or try any of the things included on the disk? I noticed a couple of applications on the list of things included on the disk that involved graphics or theme type related things. Forgive my merely brushing the subject. I have sence closed the browser that had the list on it, even then, I only gave the list a quick glance. Have you checked your running processes (cntrl/alt/del>taskmanager) or the control panel add/remove icon for any "odd or new" type things installed that could possibly be the cause. Tried safemode bootup to see if the problem cleared up? Tried changing the mouse icons or your current theme? Looked at your keyboard or mouse cursor settings (again via control panel)? Checked your own graphics adapter settings via device manager (pinks, greens, black and blank effects are known colors for graphic problem.) Logged on as another user?

    Hi BB,

?? WHY ?? delete the recent ones and keep the older ones ??
There is a way to do that, but it would be a big mess.

I don't think he means that - think he just got rid of his RP's recently.

    Regards - Charles

sorry bout. that yes i delete the restore points
    when i clean my sys
    then i go to restore
    and set a restore point
in regards to the blinking cursor
i tried the restore option as soon as i saw i was having trouble
but it made no difference .
i tried uninstalling the driver .
i turned the compt off before the sys configured the driver .
    ive tried mouse pointers
now im confined to swearing at bart pe.
    i have
regcleaner on my sys and normally when i
    try bart pe
i can delete those entrys from bart pe
which seems to embed them selves on to my sys
and i can delete them with reg cleaner.
    but this cursor thing .
is another whole ball game .
it is a nuisance when you have to back
space or delete a letter or a word .
now i wipe the whole sentence and start again .
as it is im not the best at text and the k-board.
    so this is another nuicance.

    Marty, to uninstall the driver
Go to Start, right-click on My Computer, select Properties. Go to the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button. Click on the plus (+) for "Mice and Pointng Devices ". Right-click on the mouse listing and select uninstall .
You may know how to get to it, but it sounds like you have selected reinstall rather than uninstall.
If uninstall does not appear anywhere, I would say that you have quite a few problems with your system.

I am very cautious when it comes to registry cleaners, etc. Some of the things I see that are offered for "cleaning" are legitimate items (like links to CD programs). I only let them "clean" those items that I know are defunct, like links to programs that I have uninstalled.

Utilities like Bart PE can be very powerful, I always err on the side of caution when using them or have my system backed-up when I need to use them.

Give us some more details if you notice them. It may be that you need a repair/reinstall if someone can't spot a definite fix.

    hi mattman
yes ive uninstalled the driver 3 times .
but that things keeps comming back .
it is some where on the sys .
and ive tried to find it as ime not that shook on the
    registry
i dont want to go down that road
    i found with bart pe
if you open any appli it
latches on to your sys .
and the entrys can be found in
    regcleaner
    but not in
add and remove. so that makes it hard to locate any spyware.
    dont get me wrong
it is a good appli but needs to be studied first .
    .
my advice to anyone using bart pe
make sur you know what your doing or you will
fall into the trap i fell into.
im not sure how the thing got on my
    sys
    maybe i moused over something.
    ive tried Adaware,spybot
    hijack this
    i installed
    **** cleaner
    maybe it would work
    but no go
god i dont want to reinstall windows

Marty, have you done a system file check?
It sounds like you accidentally replaced a system file with one from Bart PE. System file checker should see the changed file and restore it.

    Start > Run
    type
    sfc /scannow
    hit enter
provide the CD (note if you do not have a cd with same service pack you will need to borrow one or make the slipstream folder on your drive and redirect by editing the registry .

Marty, your hardrive could fail tomorrow. Be a good scout. Be ready for the unexpected.

I would prefer to fix my system than "work around" faults in it.

I am not saying to give up now, just to explore all the avenues. If you cannot find the solution, maybe it's time for a revamp.

    A repair/reinstall is not a "clean install ".
A successful repair of Windows may get you back to where you were before...no problems.
An unsuccessful reinstall of Windows may mean that you get back to where you were before, if you reinstall your applications to the same folder they were previously in.
[both are run from booting to the CD]

Don't think that you need to wipe everything out by formatting. There are recovery methods if needs be.

    Matt
