I had a password set up on my computer which worked fine but I was giving my computer to my daugther and she wanted it changed, so I changed it and it refuses to work now. The old password did work again to start with but now no password works and I'm completely locked out of my computer, Windows won't even boot up now without the password. I haven't a clue what to do and feel like throwing the stupid computer out of the window!

    Can anyone help? :(

pixiedust - Welcome to the Board :)

We follow Microsoft's Policy regarding missing or invalid passwords - Posting Rules #6 which means that we are generally unable to help you.

However we may be able to go part way down the road as there appears to be a genuine problem here ....

Is the password required on boot up at the POST screen (the white text on a black background which appears when the computer is first booted up) - a BIOS password or are you referring to the Windows log on password. If it is the latter that you tried to change, will the computer accept a blank password?

    Password problem...

The password that is causing me the problem is the one when the screen is black and the password is typed in with a white prompt to do so. I can't even get Windows to boot up without this working.

You say you changed this password? What Operating system? IS this a BIOS password? Did you try both the old and new one?

As PeteC said, we cannot tell you how to violate passwords.

That is the BIOS password - Supervisor password and is set in the BIOS - as you presumably know as you changed it.

Clearing the CMOS chip should fix the problem ....

Without knowing your motherboard I can only guess at the way to do this. Open the case and carefully remove the battery on the motherboard - wait 5 minutes and replace it. This should reset the CMOS chip to the default settings.

On some motherboards there is a jumper which needs to be temporarily closed and on others a couple of contacts on the board under the battery holder - visible when the battery is removed. If you have a manual for the board you should find the info there.

It is possible that the battery is on the way out and needs to be replaced.

    Thanks...

Thank you so much for letting me know what I can do to fix this problem. You are very kind to do so and I'm sure my daughter will appreciate having a working computer again.

    Many Thanks.

HardwareCentral - Tutorials - Configure the BIOS
You will need this guide to properly reconfigure things after you clear the cmos. You can clear the cmos by either removing the motherboard battery (coinlike thing on the motherboard) for a few minutes (may take overnight) or moving the clear cmos jumper on the motherboard from the run to clear position, waiting a minute and putting it back.
