After being connected to the internet with my dial up for extended periods of time the network tab in task manager shows my dial up network to be non operational even though I have disconnected from the dial up connection. What is the cause of this?

From Task Manager Help (open Task Manager > click Help > search for networking tab > display View Network Connections):

This seems to indicate that only LAN traffic across the NIC is displayed.

If you are having some sort of trouble with your dial connection, tell us what it is and we may be able to help.

The problem I have is this. Despite the fact that I have manually disconnected my dial-up ISP, which is how I have always disconnected when I used Win 98, my ISP still shows up in the networking tab but shows to have a status of non-operational. The problem really shows when I try to connect to the internet again with the ISP showing to be non-operational even though I am not connected yet. I can still dial up my ISP and it shows to have connected by showing the two monitors representing my dial-up connection in the system tray. Even though it looks like I have had a successful connection I can not get any data from the internet. I cannot get web pages to load. I cannot get my yahoo messenger to log in. I cannot log into my email accounts with Outlook Express.

That part is confusing to me. Have you tried disabling the LAN connection before dialing?

I just got WinXP Home and think I'm having the same problem: network cable unplugged/isp connection disabled, and it wasn't connecting. I disabled the network connection (I'm not on a network, dial-up only). I restored to a previous date and it will connect now, but I don't get my connection box when I click Internet Explorer or Outlook Express and it still says my connection is disabled. I have to go to my shortcut or to Connect To under the start menu. That's OK, but it seems to take several tries to connect now and before I'd get the connection box like I should and connect on the first try. It's set to always dial my default connection and everything looks good there. I do tech support for a local isp, and we had a customer with this problem and fixed it by using my supervisor's theory of removing the dial-up connection, disabling the network card, uninstalling the modem, letting the system reboot and redetect the modem, then going through inetwiz again. I'm not excited to try this at home, any ideas?
