I have an "up to date" (or so I thought) XP Pro OS:
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
System Information report written at: 09/17/05 18:22:52

    [System Summary]

    System Type X86-based PC
    Processor x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 6 GenuineIntel ~933 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Award Software International, Inc. 6.00 PG, 2/8/2002
    SMBIOS Version 2.3
    Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
    System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32
    Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
    Locale United States
    Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)"

    Available Physical Memory 512.77 MB
    Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
    Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
    Page File Space 1.46 GB
    Page File C:\pagefile.sy
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

I just ran the File Signature Verification Utility and it came up with 4 files that were not signed:

    nmmulti.inf 8-6-2000 v N/A
    nmports.inf 12-2-2001 v N/A
    nmuninst.exe 5-7-2001 v1.0.0.1
    parallel.sys 11-17-99 v4.0.1381.299

This is the first time I have run this utility since I installed XP/P a month or so ago. I was surprised to see the above files come up unsigned.

Now to the best of my limited knowledge, this system seems to be working fine with the exception that the printer (HP Deskjet 930C) can't communicate the cartridge status to the OS when it is on the parallel port. However, it works just fine on a USB port.

It seems to me the date of the parallel.sys is quite old. Could the above old unsigned files be contributing to this issue, especially the parallel.sys file?

I would greatly appreciate any help!

Well I have discovered all 4 files are part of a NetMos driver set for an addon parallel port PCI card. I will see if there is a more up to date version of parallel.sys on my XP CD.

Parallel.sys is not a current Windows XP file - it has been added to your system by the software installed with your parallel port card. There is a downloadable copy here

The XP file is parport.sys to be found on your computer at ....

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\parport.sys

You could try reinstalling the parallel port card, although it may not be fully XP compatible.

    Thanks Pete!

I was able to find a newer set of drivers for this card and it does not use the old parallel.sys driver any more. It seems NetMos was recently purchased by Moschip and I found the newer drivers on the Moschip web site.

I apologize for not having done more research on this before I posted.

No need for apologies :) - we're here to help. Glad to hear you have progressed. Is the printer problem solved?
