Double click on the error message in Event Viewer to open and on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste the contents here.

Have you tried a Repair of Office (Help > Detect and Repair) and checked for any updates/service packs for Office 97?

rodger - Pete's advice is good if you want to try and force Office97 to work but you may not want to.

Given how much interplay there is between any large Office Suite and your PC platform (OS & hardware) and given the very advanced age of Office97, I can easily imagine a PC where it would never play nice.

You might want to check out Open Office. Free, works with nearly all (word, spreadsheet, over 99% of documents) files created by Microsoft Office. It does well on an XP system and the price is certainly good. :)

We had Office 97 on a WindowsXP system for two years. It's important to get all the updates installed from the MS Office Update website. After updating be sure to go back and check for further updates, too!

The Open Office suite mentioned by another poster here is a very good product, and it does most of what Office XP can do. Also, it takes up less space on your hard drive if I remember correctly!
