WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Sorry to put you through all this
I wanted to see how much that ad-aware with the vx2 plugin and ewido would clean
They both did a nice job

    One last file
If you could navigate to the following with no extension
    C:\WINDOWS\prYtk
I find no info about it
Right click on it and left click properties, do you know what it's related too?
If in doubt please send it to the backup folder
    The rest looks good

If everything running ok now would be a good time to clear those restore points again
Don't forget to reenable System Restore

You should install SP2 then visit Windows updates and check for all other latest Critical (High Priority) updates
Set the date and time properly on the machine or you'll have a heck of a time visiting the site
Also, don't forget about the link that PeteC supplied in the XP forum sticky
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) Support Centre

I would also look into these 2 free tools to help tighten up the security on this system

    SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer

    Also,
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
    Download link
To help understand how to install and keep it updated take a look at this tutorial at Bleeping Computers Click Here
By the way, IE-Spyad is compatible with SP2 as well

    Stay safe :)

    Indmusic,

No problem, I really do appreciate the help.

I'll check out the file you mentioned and if I can't find out anything on it I'll put it in the backup folder. I'll clear the restore points and turn on system restore again and take a manual restore point before applying SP2.

I have Spyware Blaster and IESpyads on my list of things to do with this machine before returning it to the owner. I have set the date and time in BIOS, I replaced the cmos battery so that should be fine from now on.

The machine seems to be running fine, it definitely boots much quicker than when I got it, and there's no BSOD now.

Thanks again for all your help, it's been an interesting experience and I've learned about some new tools that I didn't know about.

Thanks also to Markp and Oshwyn5 for their help on this.
