Problems after applying Windows Updates

I have a new winxp pro , the question i have is about windows updates.When i go to the update site it says i need 22 critical updates. i downloaded them all and they installed an immediately i started having problems........the biggest i could not dial up the Internet. so i did a system restore put every thing back working. Is there a proper way to upgrade? Should i do one at a time check the effect before going on........am i better off in the long run by not updating.......?

raywilcox--Definitely agree with Newt, but maybe you did overload your PC by trying to install 22 updates at once. (In the past, Windows Updates often would tell you if certain updates had to be installed separately from the others, but I guess this did not happen.)
And if you are running WinXP SP1 perhaps you should install SP2 first before any of the other updates. (In fact after installing SP2, it might be best to run Windows Update again to see if you get a small list of Updates) I suspect that may be part of the reason for Newt's question.
It is possible to Save the individual Updates and install one at a time, as you suggested. You really should not have to check effects after each, though it is not a bad idea since you did have problems.
Did you have your AntiVirus turned off and other programs/windows closed when you installed all the updates? That is a good procedure to follow when installing any new program.
Before trying to install the updates again, you might go into Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs|look under WinXP-Software Updates and uninstall any of those 22, which may still be in the list, from there. Using System Restore should not be use as an uninstaller since it could leave stuff behind.

 

This is a problem with the install entry, it did not add the correct entries in the registry to register that the update is installed.

One of those downloads may have corrupted your Winsock2 file. If this happens again when you install the updates, MS explains how to restore it.

There have been lots of updates since SP2 was released last fall.
Just make a note of the ones it says you need and do as the microsoft link says.
